Import Tax

I imported something which cost about £37 from the US and had to pay £15 to Royal Mail, £8 of that was a "handling fee". At the moment it's not really worth buying anything outside of the EU unless you have no choice and are prepared to be shafted.

What a daft statement, I buy outside of the EU all the time - as long as you know what the taxes and charges are it’s fine.

Hadn't thought about this, but assuming we leave EU WITH a deal, what happens re EU purchases?

Depends what trade deal, but I'd expect it would be no different than the same rates as the US or Japan.
Yup which is going to be extremely annoying and expensive for many hobbyists, let alone anything else (one of my main hobbies has me, and most of my gaming group buying stuff worth ~£20 from the EU on a regular basis).

At the moment there are no customs/handling fees to be paid on anything you buy inside the EU, regardless of which country, once we leave there are going to be an awful lot of people getting some nasty surprises as import fees start to be applied to purchases made from companies they may have used dozens of times, at least if we exist with no customs deal.
