In a predicament at work...

Err WTF I personally think your IT area needs to bang their heads together. A proper setup system in the first instance is what is required here and personally would sack someone in IT.

You sound like a right snitch implementing a monitoring system rather than a prevention system ;)

I bet 100% that I could not access any porn site at my office of 90ish people, not that I am willing to try

Then from that I can monitor traffic:

Lawful interception of a communication

(a) monitoring or keeping a record of communications -

(iii) for the purpose of preventing or detecting crime, or
bittorrent, p2p

(iv) for the purpose of investigating or detecting the unauthorised use of that or any other telecommunication system
I'm pretty sure looking at nekkid boobies falls under this

as well as

(b) monitoring communications for the purpose of determining whether they are communications relevant to the system controller's business which fall within regulation 2(b)(i) above; or

I mean, at the moment I'm not monitoring at an individual level (we don't have the facility to), but I'm sure there's no harm me looking at firewall logs and reporting odd activity (but not persuing anyone unless there is concrete evidence)

The stupid things people do with the computers their employer provides for their work never ceases to amaze me. I mean really, browsing porn sites at work, what part of that do they think is acceptable?

Step one, get a 'computer user guidelines' type policy written up, distributed to all employees and get signed copies back if this hasn't been done already. It's best practice and frankly just common sense in any reasonably sized company.

Whilst this does not put the physical block in place it at least starts the groundwork by telling people how they should use the IT equipment provided and allows the whole "just because you can doens't mean you should" argument :)

Then start implementing the physical restrictions with things like websense, traffic filtering software etc.

And get locking those workstations down so people can't install stuff willy nilly! :)

We have software on our network that either blocks or logs access to websites on a blacklist, you can also set a window so users can access ebay, facebook etc in their lunchtime but not during working hours.

We sell this software so I won't mention the name, we sell to schools and have had to inform head teachers/police on a couple of occasions.

There's quite a few products out there that do it, think we use surfcontrol for web filtering where I work.

Whilst I can understand the tempetation to browse OcUK at work, or perhaps look for the football results and play stupid flash games what on earth makes people think looking for PORN at work is a good idea? I mean, seriously? What?!

Are they going to flop it out and crack one off at the desk when they find what they want? I'm genuinelly confused as to why anyone would view porn at work.

Haven't you seen that old Big Train sketch about 'pleasuring' yourself in the office :p Google 'Big Train Work Place' :p

*disclaimer* you can tell from the video title what it'll be about so don't watch it at work as contains a naughty word beginning with W :)

You have to remember that the computers are the property of the company so it's perfectly legal they control their usage. They should have a user policy in place which all employees should sign before being allowed to use the computer system. This is the standard procedure for nearly all educational establishements these days.

It should be the best pratice for all establishments, not just education!
