I am in need of some of yourvaluable knowledge to help me

I have been gaming on consoles for a long time but have always wanted a good pc to game with the problem I have is that my last pc was a hand me down from parents and is wait for it a ........pentium 4 , now you see why I need an upgrade which seems it has been a long time coming.

I already have mouse keyboard and 2 monitors which off the top of my head are 24inch which I need to check on to see if they will be up to a bit of gaming.

I am wanting to play a variety of games from the old stuff like gangsters and command and conquer etc to the new latest stuff, I also play football manager.

I also would like to use the computer for photoshop and coreldraw, coreldraw I use for some printing which I do and Photoshop is nothing heavy at present I suppose more just getting used to it and learning to use it.

Now for the budget I do not really know so would like as many options as I can get For say £600 I think.

I would like to have a go at building this myself although I have never built a complete machine I have played around with removing stuff before and software etc.

I will need a OS as I have no discs etc for the old windows on the pc however I do have a laptop which has windows 7 on it I may be able to use but again no discs came when I purchased that.

Well I think that's enough ramblings and I thank you all very much in advance as I appreciate a lot of these posts come up which I have looked through for the last few months whilst dreaming of my own machine.

Thanks

I have £600 as budget but if a bit over would make masses of differences say bewteen mid and top range etc then I would look to extend but was wanting to see what could be had for the initial budget thanks

Thanks Lemin, I am really quite out of the know with the latest tech as you can prob tell by still having a P4, if you could go a little more on budget is there anything else you would change that would make a massive diffrence I.e say for i5 to i7 etc

Thanks again for your reply

Thanks guys I was going to clarify the prices as when I clicked they included vat.

Any other suggestions on builds are welcome and thanks for all those who have taken the time to respond it is really appreciated.

Lemin's suggested is spec is quite good, cause in the future you would only need to change the GPU.

You could add another £20 and get a bit of a better GPU now. This is the new version of the GTX 750Ti.

MSI GeForce GTX 950 OC 2048MB GDDR5 £119 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-300-MS&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=2392

Bearing in mind that Lemin's spec is very good for the Future, you could get something that would be more balanced now but would leave room for an upgraded CPU next year or a few years hence.

Intel Core i5-4460 3.20GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £155 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-535-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=567

Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £62 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-498-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2811

MSI Radeon R9 380 Gaming 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £159 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-291-MS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=3059

Got to admit, changing the CPU can be a pain. Changing the GPU is easy. It would depend on what you'd want to do in the future.

I know money is hard to come by but i think the best bet for you to do, would be to drop the GTX 750Ti from Lemin's spec and spend the extra to get something like the MSI Radeon R9 380. Adding another £50 to your budget would make a big difference. Not what you want to hear but i am being honest with you.

ewww £200 motherboards... why?

Frankly, if you want a good PC, gaming, £1K is usually the target. Else be ready to compromise (more than I'd be comfortable with).

Skylake better (ish) but more expensive. DDR3 vs DDR4 debatable, but if you can afford the latest, why not, as long as it doesn't compromises the rest of the components.

i5 'K' CPU, Skylake or Haswell generation, not much in between. i7 if you really want to splash out, but it's not entirely necessary.

A £120-ish motherboard.

8GB OK, 16GB if you can squeeze that in the budget.

For GPU, the best you can afford. about £250 for a £1K build. GTX970 usually recommended.

A 128GB SSD for OS is plenty, cheap is fine (I like Crucial, dependable). A 2/3GB hard drive for storage (I prefer WD over Toshiba and Seagate).

550W+ PSU (Gold-certified preferably, Bronze also OK). Around £70.

Case, well, I like the Fractals (R4, R5). Corsair makes cheaper, good entry cases as well. Silverstone, and Fractal do as well. I don't recommend the super cheapo stuff though.

For CPU cooler, single tower, single fan, around £30 will do the trick.

If you have a Windows 7 OS, the upgrade to Windows 10 is, I believe, still free. I do not think you can transfer a laptop OS to a desktop (licensing issues), or at least, you won't be able to upgrade, if it even installs.

for around £600, you can drop the SSD and CPU cooler for later (as long as you go retail CPU), and go one grade lower on the GPU (£150-£180), but I would still keep a i5 'K' + 8GB + decent motherboard as the minimum target, and a decent PSU (550W) for a GPU upgrade later.

I still have my rig in my signature, and not planning to upgrade in a while. So it pays to select good quality components. Spend once, my dad always said.

Interesting comparisons.
