Hi all,

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 and it's now 3 months old. I just don't like it, especially since building water cooling. It's so loud and I'm sure there’s something better out there that’s fast and quieter. Not interested in SSD just yet.

Would this be a fitting replacement to have for my OS / Games?

Hope someone can help,

Thanks,

RoEy

I have two WD Caviar blacks in RAID and they're much quieter than my old rattling Seagate 7200.10s were. But don't expect silence. For a quieter drive either look at the WD Caviar Green or the Samsung F1.

if you want speed and quietness then samsung f1 is your best shot, wd blacks are a bit quicker but quite a bit noisier.

Noise output is subjective, I personally wouldn't purchase a hard drive that a few people on a forum say is quiet. Everyone has different hardware, fans, hearing sensitivity.

Try the following link for a well put together list of properly tested drives for noise output: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article29-page2.html. Their forums are also very good for this sort of thing.

I wouldn't expect Caviar Blacks to be quiet compaired to your 7200.12s.

It also might pay to try and mount the drive differently, tighten the screws or try elastic mounting before replacing it.

Ok I'll check this first of all. I do have the Samsung F1 1TB though and it's been very quiet. Kind of answered my own question.

Thanks,

Mark

Yeah, or you could go with a Samsung F2 1Tb drive, they use 500Gb platters and 5400 RPM spindle speed. A little slower but would be good as a storage drive with maybe a SSD or two in the future for your boot drive.

Hi Speed,

Thanks for the advice mate. I've opted for the Samsung F1 750GB 32MB Cache. Seems a good all-rounder and get's a lot better reviews than the dreadful Seagate I had.

Thanks again,

RoEy

Good choice, let us know how it is noise wise.
