IN STOCK NOW POWERCOLOR & SAPPHIRE 5850 & 5870

They'd be crazy to hold back if they'd had them, selling 10,000 at £300 would be way better than selling 1,000 at £350!!

Agreed.
I've seen 5870's in stock at 300 pound and 5850's in stock at 5850's, 5770's in stock at 100.
Right now, the XFX 5870 can be had for 304.99, XFX 5850 at 217.99

If you post this is the product suggestion forum with links OCUK generally look into it to find out why they dont have the best UK price ;)

the VAT Increase is only 2.5%.
Some people are acting as if its way more and when that increase hits were all in trouble. A lot of retailers didnt even pass the savings on it seems.

The qualms people have with these prices is that theyre 30-50 more than they were at release and have been lower many places, the 2.5% increase is a lot lower than the additional costs of these cards atm.

With the VAT increase coming back in a few days, any drop will quickly go back up. Good luck with that :)

As has been said, it's 2.5%. It only makes sense to buy big expensive products now at the reduced rate of VAT, and ONLY if you know the price isn't going to come down soon anyway.

We are talking about computer parts here costing a few hundred notes. Computer parts, like all electronics, are some of the most depreciative items one can buy. Prices on the 5800 series are gonna come crashing down soon... watch and wait.

I realise that the main issue people have is the higher than launch price. I was right there at the start when these cards were £199 and £299 for the 5850 an 5870 respectively.

With regards to the 2.5% increase on VAT, at no point during my response to Cold Fusion was I "acting as if its way more". See my reply to purplesky below for what I was getting at...

I wasn't suggesting to Cold Fusion that he should either hold off or purchase immediately. I was simply intimating that his wish of a price drop was not likely forthcoming in the near future, that's it.

Crashing down is a bit strong. We're likely to see prices settle around the £200/300 mark over the next month or so as availability improves, beyond that not a lot is going to happen. Fermi won't make any difference unless NVIDIA takes a big hit on its margins, since it uses the same process and has a higher transistor count.

RRP was £180 I believe, so these are £50 above original RRP.

If only I could ship in from the US, they have the 5850, sub £190 (after conversion, obviously) and in stock, unfortunately said company won't send to the UK due to the warranty, shame really.

£229 RGP

Recommended Greedtail Price:p

Seems plenty in stock everywhere (5850, 5870) so it`s just down to the 1st greedtailer to stop milking the situation then they`ll all follow....

....the whole thing has been more than a bit grubby imo:(

It's got nothing to do with greed it's to do with supply and demand. If stock sits around in a warehouse and doesn't look like it's going to move any time soon the retailers will start to discount it in order to turn stock in cash.

Unfortunately for the customers, it's true.

@Fatboy; I've seen a competitor offering pre-orders of Asus 5850s with stock to arrive in the next week or so, does this mean you'll be getting stock also?

It is greed, and demand, as everyone wants a 5 series, they are not sitting in warehouses going unsold, they are going out as fast as they get in, the cards that have been delivered, and are being sold, have already been taken at a set price, so the price hiking you see after about half an hr of them being on sale, is the etailors grabbing extra while they can (like when no one else has stock, they'll see that, and so take advantage by upping the price, and know they will still sell them, as the demand for them is so high).

The cards are shifting at these over-inflated priced and that's all retailers need. When demand reduces (which it will in the next few weeks), the prices will come down. Not worth anything over £199, but there are people prepared to pay it so let it be.

I think it's morally wrong, I would rather have less money and sleep at night, I used to be a taxi driver I never charged extra on new years day or xmas, I made a VERY good living without charging more just because I could if I wanted to, my customers rewarded me with work all year round.

Just because they can doesn't mean they have to.

I have no information on Asus getting any allocation at all for the next two to three weeks. I do not know where they are getting there information from but I would not invest in there eta.

Ok, cheers Fatboy.

@sammie377: Morals are just opinions at the end of the day, I don't think it's immoral for companies to charge more for having stock of an item that's in high demand. Do I like it? No. Simple answer is to not pay more than what you think it's worth, plenty of people thought it was worth £250 and so it sold at £250, if everyone agreed with you then the prices wouldn't even hit that high ;) As for me, it'd have to be £200 or less as after everything for my PC sans graphics, I'm left with ~£200.
