Hi Guys,

I am in the process of building my rig:
My parts:
I have a few questions however...

Firstly, I am having some trouble connecting the different parts..

1) Do I use AC'97 or HDAudio?

2)
The 20 Pin connector slots in very well... but the 4 Pin doesn't seem to want to go in...

Any reasons behind this? Or do i really just have to force it?

3)
Seems I have some extra connectors on each of my fans. What am I meant to do with these?

4)

My IO shield and Mobo are misalined. I figured once I got the computer to post / up and running, I could just readjust my screws/standoffs.

5)
I am not really sure what else I have left to connect. I know the pics are not HQ but can anyone suggest anything I have done wrong.

6)
Where does this red ATA cable go?

7)
Does it matter what SATA ports I use for SSD, HDD, and Optical?

Thanks Overclockers!!!

1). AC97

2). If you look at the 4pin it has two little "knobs" sticking out, these need to go under the edges on the top of plastic part of the 20pin, where is should 'clip'. Then it fits in nice and easy. (Sorry for poor description, slightly hungover :()

3). Nothing, they're just adapters and for things like fan controllers or running another fan off that power line.

4). Motherboard isn't aligned properly would be my guess, sure you have standoffs in right place and screws in tight? Might be worth just undoing screws, and making sure you push mobo down and left so it aligns then screw in :p

5). 4-pin needs to be connected - that's all I can see from that limited shot that is also very blurry! I assume you've plugged in all the front panel stuff? And the CPU 8pin power? (Its two 4 pins in your case).

6). Where is the SATA cable coming from in the first place?

7). No, but generally boot drive goes in port #2, HDD in port #3 and optical in port#1 - saves you having to change boot order in BIOS

do not force any thing in to any socket!!!
the 4 pin part fits in to grooves on the side of the 20 pin part and together you connect them to the socket.....if your shield doesnt align with the mobo there must be something stopping it...do not power it on until you have checked it out incase its shorting something out.it matters which sata ports you use only if its sata 2 or sata 3 you want to use or depends on which controller you want to use also either marvel or jmicron etc....i would use marvel over jmicron all day long....you fans will come with every cable you might need to connect so you will have some you dont use

Good point by cammy, forgot about S-ATA 6GB/s. The SSD goes in one of those :p Preferably port #1

Then Optical in S-ATA II port #1 and HDD in port #2.

Off topic:

Cammy, what happened to your unnecessary (:p) 980x?

1) OK thankyou
2)Will do, I think I have it sorted
3) Ok... but I don't understand where the 4 pin fan pieces are supposed to go..

I see Sysfan 1-4.. but those are only 3 pin receivers

4) Darn... I am sure that no part of the mobo is touchng the case.. should I really take it apart again :o

5) I believe so yes.

6) It is a red cable coming from the case. It says ATA on it and looks like the end of a SATA cable.

7) Ahh I am not fussed about that I just want the computer to boot!

Last question... which VGA adapter/cable should I use to connect to my brand new sony 23'

off topic:

i swapped it for a 920 plus £330 cookeh....i would have kept it but i need to money right now and plus it was a bit of a e-pennis extension...(no told you so please)

3). 4 pin pieces? Assuming that they are molex connectors - should come from the PSU to power the fan. Any chance of some better pics? :p

4). Worth it, you don't want to discover you have a short AFTER you ruin some components :p You'd only have to take out graphics card, the mobo/cpu/ram/cooler can all come out as one lump.

6). OFC! Forgot you had the CM690 II Advanced, not lite. Thats for the hot-swappable drive bay at the front of the case. Just plug it into a S-ATA port on the mobo.

Oooooof! So you lost what, £400? Or did you get it cheaper, originally?

I told. . . . :D

Sorry to hear about the troubles though :( Hope business picks up!

Ok I switched the power on via the wall and nothing happened. No fans or anything. Then I pressed power on on the mobo and it illuminated green but nothing happened. Maybe I have not connected the front of my case (power button) to mobo?

i got it for £615 so it wasnt a major lose really.....

and it was an awesome chip.... very fast.im going to wait till ivy bridge now then build a super rig which gives me 6 months or so to get the buisness back on track :)

on topic :

how stupid are you going to feel if you power on an your machine goes bang?
just because you were impatient and didnt want to check...

Ok... I guess I am going back to taking it apart again then!

To be honest with you mate it looks a mess inside that rig :o

My guess would be to go back, make sure the stand offs were screwed in properly, and make sure the i/o shield is alligned properly and also make sure that everything is plugged in correcttly

join the 20pin and the 4 pin motherboard connector before you plug it in and it will fit no problem.

Also for your front panel audio header you need to connect the HD Audio plug and NOT the AC97 as previously recommended.

Your i/o shield goes out of alignment more at the top and looks ok at the bottom, are the motherboard standoff's taller at the top than the others, it's that or something is obstructing the board seating postion at the top row.

Also as someone has already pointed out, the network socket area on the i/o shield has the metal tab sticking down and obstructing the port, it should be sitting on top of the network block inside the case.

Sort out those cables as well! I was shocked when I saw that was a CM 690 II; they are very easy to manage to be honest.

With the I/O shield make sure any metal tabs are sitting on top of the connectors from the motherboard.

If you fit the motherboard and the metal tabs go inside any of the connectors you'll create a short.
