My Step Father suffered severe head trauma after falling down the stairs early this morning. I wasn't present myself, but from what my Mother described, he was found unconscious and in a pool of blood. I'm not sure of the extent of his injuries, but I do know he's being transferred to a hospital in London, and has to undergo surgery to alleviate pressure on the brain. The single greatest concern is the fact that he's not responding.
My Mother was prohibited from travelling with him, and so is having to return home until further notice.

I feel completely powerless at this moment in time. I'm stuck at work until this evening. :(

There's really nothing you can do, unfortunately.

I'd definitely try and get time off of work now so you can be with your mother and help her, she's going to need you to be there for her.

Unfortunately I'm having to run the shop in my manager's absence. I'm maintaining contact over the phone in the meantime.
Business is quiet enough as for me to post here, before anyone asks.

If business is quiet why don't you close up the shop and go and be beside your Mother, give her some support in this difficult time.

Family comes way before work.

I took the liberty of posting this thread during a brief lull, but business is not quiet enough as to disregard work entirely. Believe me, I'd much rather be with my family.

Go and give the support you want too and close up the shop family come first in these difficult times, i hope all turns out well and wish your family the best

Close shop and go to see dad, the end. This is one of those moments where family comes first and any entity, be it be SME or Corporate would see it that way. Close it down and off to the hospital FFs.

Who cares? Family comes way before work. Suffer the consequences later.

Losing your job usually isn't the best thing for your family.

His hands are tied, I'm sure he wants to shut shop but obviously he can't.

Not all employers are so understanding. I know my previous one wouldn't have been; I'd likely have been disciplined harshly for "overreacting" if I closed up shop.

OP: Wishing you all the best.

I managed to reach my boss and he's permitted me to take a leave of absence. He will be here to cover for me within the next hour.

My Step Father is in theatre undergoing surgery, which will last approximately 4 hours. Apparently they discovered he was bleeding internally, and had to stop the ambulance during transit to address the problem. (He started bleeding profusely from his nose and mouth)
He's not been conscious since this morning.

Updates will follow when I have the opportunity. My sincerest thanks for your concerns.
