I thought "Series" refers to a programme as a whole and a "Season" was one run of the program.

Season is an Americanism, and one that irrationally gets on my nerves. Your definition is true for Yanks but not here in Blighty. It's just series for both over here, though I suppose you could refer to the entire history of a programme (again, program is an Americanism) by calling it a serial.
Like I said, just something that gets on my nipples...
