Personal favourite of mine with the V10. Seems like a superb all round car, and surely quattro GmbH's finest moment.

Turbo S was on the list but epic and quick as that is, I felt the V10 was such a special engine it made the R8 more of an event. The GTS I felt was lovely but again the R8 felt more special. I don't care one jot about the image or how its perceived same as with a Boxster. In Plus form it brings a sharper steer, stiffer set up and on my short drive it gave me confidence to push on early in the drive. I want a special car and the V10 married to a superb all rounder gives me a get up at 5 and drive to Wales car. Yea I'd take a GT3 over it, but not at 50k more.

When I drove the R8 V10 and it was just the boggo 500PS version, but the first thing I noticed was engine, wow what an engine, any RPM it pulled, throttle response was amazing and the noise very good indeed. No need to talk about handling R8's do that very well, back to the engine, what a gem. :D

Did you check out the Mercedes AMG GT S ?
A bit less power and more weight but more road presence.

I'd probably get the R8 over it though, just for the dynamic indicator lights :p

Also, it's one of the few cars where the fuel tank capacity is nearly more than the luggage capacity

I did look but didn't really explore them much further than a cursory glance

GT-S I think is probably one of the best handling cars right now, cannot believe I am saying that about a Merc but in the last few years they have totally transformed themselves.

Gone from huge, insane great sounding engines that breathed fire with two much power for the chassis to handle with questionable handling, which was fun and sounded great. Now they are precise handling machines with incredible chassis but the engines have being dulled by this modern age of turbo chargers. :(

Makes cars like V10 R8, Jaguar V8 very appealing as Porsche, BMW and Mercedes have all gone the way of the turbocharger and well the engines are just well not for me.

When did you drive a GT S??

There is a lot of paper chat on here. I drove the V10plus and think it's a better car than the Aventador I drove. Just an awesome experience and also had that feeling of useable and realistic for everyday use.

I was looking at R8 V8s but as houses says the engine are 380hp at best. The V10 is out of my budget but I really really liked it. Just felt right

I've still got the sheddy Honda as I don't care about what all the crap you read says. It feels awesome to drive still and it owes me nothing. 179k miles now

The owner of OcUK had one for a few days, whilst his SL63 was repaired. :)

Have driven the R8 V10, I was not saying the GT-S handles better by the way, just commenting on how Mercedes have changed in past few years. :)

Yes R8 V8 driven a few times, always felt underwhelmed, which always led back to the V8, its harsh to say its slow, its not but it felt slower than my Carrera S.

Wasn't really aiming the second bit at you.

That C63 engine is epic though :D

Was also the reason why he gave the GT-S back, as well as it drove he felt it sounded crap compared to the 6.3l, so it was a no deal.

Yes that 6.3l is immense. :D

Do tell us more on this

Sorry missed this...

When I first had my RS4 I took it to a BM3W rolling road day at Thorneys and much to my disappointment is ran, if I remember correctly 370BHP, to the great amusement of my mates (especially Angus who I had a tenner with on mine being better than his E92 M3 - RIP buddy!). So I took it back to Audi and got them to have a look....

It was at that point that the news about coking of the engine was just coming to light and Audi decided to keep the car for 6 weeks(!!) to strip it down after coking was apparent and get some engineers over to have a look. They cleaned it out and when ran again I'd gained circa 10-15bph but it never showed the numbers Audi said it would.

It then became apparent that none of them were as many were seeing the same, no one getting close to the 414BHP Audi was claiming. I had some putz from the US come on here and tell me it was my fault I was doing it wrong (obviously a fanboy who needed to justify himself) but he was, as expected, talking out of his arse.

Simply put the V8 B7 RS4 engine was flawed. It coked itself quickly (1000 miles up) and sapped power because of it. I believe there are some mods now which help but it never felt it delivered 414BHP and I always struggled to best E46 M3's until silly speeds and then only by a small amount. Transmission loss would be part of that, weight another reason but it just never felt that quick.

That is why I would not have the V8 version.
