Incorrect A-XMP timings

Morning,

Built my first AMD system, only issue is the ram not performing as advertised. It does run rock solid with the slower timings, but not sure if it's a BIOS or RAM issue.

Setup:
5800X
MSI X570 Tomahawk WiFi - Bios Version 7C84v14
Patriot Viper Steel Series DDR4 32GB (2 x 16GB) 3200MHz Kit - Dual Channel slots DIMMA2 + DIMMB2

I should be able to run these at 16-18-18-36, instead my A-XMP profile is 16-20-20-40

I've tried to manually configure the RAM timings with A-XMP on, but it seems any change I make to the RAM timings it fails to POST and I have to clear CMOS every time.

I am still learning the AMD BIOS settings, but turned off A-XMP tried and these settings manually, everything else in the BIOS is default.

DRAM Frequency - 3200Mhz
FCLK Frequency - 1600Mhz
DRAM Volatage - 1.4v
CPU NB/Soc Voltage - 1.1v
VDDP Voltage - 0.850v
VDDG CCD Voltage - 0.950v
VDDG IOD Voltage - 1.05v

Command Rate - 1T
tCL - 16
tRCDRD - 18
tRDCWR - 18
tRP - 18
tRAS - 36

It just will not POST with these settings, in fact any RAM settings I've changed, apart from enabling A-XMP, seems to cause it to fail POST and having to clear CMOS.

I have tried the RAM on my sons B450 Mortar Max board as well, but the A-XMP profile remains the same. I can maybe try another brand of MB later in the week, not sure if it'll make a difference.

I'm thinking there is an issue with the RAM, but also the MB BIOS as well is maybe immature due to the constant POST failures?

But if anyone more knowledgeable can recommend any thing else to try that would be appreciated.

On the spec sheet for the ram frequency and xmp certified 1600mhz is 16 20 20 40 , tightening the timmings does not always work.

Did you use dram caculator ?

First time using DRAM calculator, I did import xmp into DRAM calculator but don't know what some of the settings mean yet, like what memory type am I?

Apologies it's me being thick and you are correct.

Does seem odd it not running at the correct timmings have you tried 3600mhz ?

Is the ram stable run memtest .

I have tried 3600Mhz, but it fails to POST.

Although I have not run Memtest it does seem rock solid, ran plenty benchmarks Cinebench R23,R20,R15, Timespy, gamed for multiple hours.

Slightly higher timmings wont have much inpact on performace maybe a couple of fps but understandable you would want the correct timmings.

There is a beta bios avdilble for your motherboard mite be worth a try.

Other Options send for a replacement or change them to something else.

Your right I'm sure the difference in timings is negligible, my main concern was if I ever wanted to sell it on, the A-XMP timings are incorrect.

I'll try the beta BIOS and see if that helps when doing manual adjustments.

Lets us no if the bios update helps.

I'd suggest BL2K16G36C16U4B.

3600Mhz, C16 and overclocks well (at-least my kit does!)

I did look at the Crucial, can only find the 3000Mhz version in stock though.

I’ve got nearly 4 weeks left to return this RAM, I’ll wait a bit see if it comes in stock.

Shame the 8 Pack Team Group Edition price shot up from £200 to £290, would have had that.

Sorry to dig up a grave thread.

Contributing for anyone else stumbling upon this thread like I did.

I purchase the same RAM kit "Patriot Viper Steel DDR4 32GB (2 x 16GB) 3200MHz Kit - PVS432G320C6K" around a year ago and indeed it came with XMP of 16-18-18-36. I just bought the "same" kit again this week, from a rain forest website, and after installing had the exact same issue as you (X370 board, Crosshair Hero VI) and couldn't POST.

Just installed CPU-Z to check what's going on, and sure enough even though the kits have the same model numbers, their XMP profiles are very different.

You can see the specs here, old kit in slots #1 & #2 and new kit in #3 & #4:

It would seem that over the course of a year or so, this memory spec was changed. I'm going to play around with the timings and voltages over the next week and see if I can find a happy middle ground or even bring the new kit into 16-18-18-36.

older ram is single rank and latest ram is dual rank
might be whats different?

It looks like the 2x16gb 3200MHz kit went through a change, they both share the same parts number but the timings are different:

The old spec sheet is not even easily found on Patriot's site any more, OP must've got his during the transition to the new kit.

Just want to say I have the 3733mhz version of this kit and have mine running at 3800 C16 from 3733 C17.

16-19-19-36 1T with 4 RAM sticks (32GB total).

The memory used on mine is Hynix CJR.
