Incorrect CPU Speed in Windows Vista

Hi guys,

Apologies if this is already been answered, but my CPU speed within Windows Vista is showing incorrectly. It should read 3.5Ghz but it is only saying 2.67Ghz. I have checked the BIOS numerous times and it shows the CPU at 3.5Ghz. Windows XP was correct but now I have upgraded to Vista the speed has dropped. CPU-Z reports that the multiplier is running at only x6 but the BIOS says it is x8. I am very confused by this. Is this a general problem with Vista or is there something I can change? Spec is in profile. Thanks guys ;)

Sounds like cpu speed stepping. just saves power and heat output. all its is is that when vista "read" your clock speed it was just that. if cpu-z shows your propper frequency then thats okay..

although personally i would disable it in the bios


sorry i dont know the exact wording of it in gigabyte bios''s'ss's's probably something like "Speed Step"

Another one to check is control panel, power options, when I upgraded my PC I needed to put this on high performance.

Do you need to disable it? I'm assuming the performance will be there when you need it!?!

Correct. Some people have said it doesn't work for them but for the most part, it's a good way of reducing heat and power usage. Best left on.
