Increase performance of GPU via firmware update

No, it's probably something to do with the boost speeds he was getting have now increased. If he's not talking out of his arse that is.

I just read this. What do you guys make of it

Placebo effect or do you reckon he could be on to something?

Cheers

It all depends.
When April 2016 AMD released the UEFI bios for FuryX & Nano I saw around 9% improvement clock for clock.
However the bigger bonus was that both cards allowed for higher overclocks. 1190 (from 1080) on the FuryX and 1120 (from 1070) on the Nano.
So overall a hefty ~20% for the FuryX in one go.

Also the GTX1080Ti Xtreme I had came with F2 bios where the card felt bit clunky when it was trying to achieve it's boost clock.
The Gigabyte tool offered to upgrade to F4, which accepted. Straight away the card was clocking to 2021 boost clock and didn't throttle that much when hit temp limits.

I have been running that firmware for a couple of months now and saw absolutely no performance boost at all. It was only to update displayport for 1.3 and 1.4 screens.

https://forums.oculusvr.com/communi...ia-firmware-update-to-boost-vr-performance/p1

well after following that thread i have updated. TBH i needed to do it anyway as it would just be my luck to sell the card in a few weeks if i get an 1180 and the buyer complain due to problems with display ports and VR.
going on the thread above it seems there are definite improvements for vr, at least in some titles so maybe NV fixed another bug on the side which they did not advertise. DCS takes so long to load that i gave up trying to get fps before (I could not get ASW to disable which would have made it meaningless as i get a steady 45fps anyway) and just applied the update.

There does not seem to be much change in flat screen games so maybe something to do with how the card displays VR??

Ok, I am going to take back what I said earlier.

I have read all about the firmware upgrade and what it affects and it's purely for display port 1.3/1.4. There is nothing in it that's supposed to affect performance. It definitely shouldn't make any difference to VR, especially since I am using HDMI. But, it has, it's also made a difference in 2D gaming. I know, it goes against all logic and I can't explain it. Is it placebo? I would like to think it isn't, but anyway here are my findings.

My system, just in case it matters is an AMD Ryzen 1700, MSI X370 Pro Carbon, 16GB ram, 1080Ti, Asus MG279Q Freesync monitor, Oculus Rift.

The two things that I have tried are The Witcher 3 and Eleven: Table tennis in VR. Normally when I play Witcher 3 I get occasional drops in framerate, a little stutter every now and then. It was no big deal and I just presumed it was brief loading of textures or new areas. I played for 2 hours last night after the update, didn't stutter once. Smooth sailing all the way. I am not taking this as 100% proof of anything just yet, but, it was a remarkable coincidence.

Then I booted my VR headset and tried Eleven Table Tennis. When I had the core 2 home enabled I was getting random lag in the game. Again, sort of stuttering. Other people have had the same issue and it was easily solved, just remove the new dash and go back to the old one. So I enabled the new Dash and started the game. No flicker or lag or stutter for the hour tested it.

Am I getting a performance boost? I am not sure as I didn't measure frame rates. I don't think I am, but, the Firmware update has improved something.
