Hey guys, I'm running out of space on my main hard drive partition and I was wondering whether it was possible to expand the main partition without having to format either of the partitions?

Yep, the likes of GParted or Partition Magic will do what you're looking for. Make sure you've got a backup first, while moving partitions around is usually safe there's always a risk of something going wrong.

Right click on the partition you want to make smaller and click shrink volume. Do the same on the main partition but click extend volume. If you have Vista or 7 just type Disk management in the search box under the start menu and click on create and format disk partitions.

Are you trying to extend the "C" volume?

I think with Windows you can only extend a partition if there's empty space to the right of it in disk management.

You can't extend into the 200GB on the left.

Maybe there are other programs which can do that.

With that layout I'd be looking to move the d: partition to the right and then shift the System Reserved and c: partitions to the far left. As it stands at the moment you're booting from the slowest part of the disk.
