I'm looking to put a rig together. I've set a budget for about £2500, so I have some wiggle room in my set up if there's any major gains by buying more expensive kit.

My intention is to use it for FPS and I want to get a Index VR. I'm going to look at a super-wide screen monitor as well.

I've done some research on here and following advice that others have given to other people asking the same sorts of questions.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £2,038.09 (includes shipping: £13.20)
It's been a long time since i built a rig myself so be gentle.

Questions regarding monitors:

  1. Is it advisable to get a G-Sync enabled monitor?
  2. Is 3,440 x 1,440 really the sweet spot for gaming? Will my system work at that resolution for games on high settings?
  3. I've read a review that the Samsung CJ791 is a pretty good bang for buck, super-wide.

Questions regarding the rig:

  1. If i build it myself, will I have all the cables i need to put it together? If not, what should i buy?
  2. Do I need a sound card or is everyone using onboard sound and headphones nowadays?
  3. Where in the shopping cart area (if that's where it is) do you have the option for OCUK to build it? I think I've read it's £150?
  4. If OCUK build the rig, will they add all the cables and tie-backs etc?
  5. I don't need it to look good, but I expect i'll look at overclocking it so a good aircooling set up is a requirement.
  6. I'm not sure about putting in a custom water cooled loop. I could give it ago but if it's going to drive the cost up for no real gains over air, then i'd rather leave it out.
  7. Would OCUK build a water cooled loop if i added the loop materials to the items list?
Thanks for any help rendered and apologies for any ignorance.

@mrlizard thanks very much for your answers, very helpful.
@orbitalwalsh thank you for your response. Just to be clear, your baskets in order are:
  1. Option 1 - Intel loadout
  2. Option 2 - Ryzan & 43inch monitor rather than super-wide. why 43inch rather than superwide? i.e. is it personal preference or more screen real estate?
  3. Option 3 - full spec inc 27inch monitor
  4. Opiton 3 - What do you mean in current climate? Are prices artificially high because of the corona?
  5. Is Ryzan the best to go for over Intel at the moment? From what i've been reading that is the case.
  6. is the Ryzen 7 3700X best bang for buck? as opposed to the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X i put in my basket?

I am also using an Index for VR and love it, no super wide monitor for me but I do have two additional monitors running at the same time with a Gigabyte 2070 (non s) and it smashes most things, HL Alyx is a great demo of the kit

Does the index and it's peripherals need spliters or do they just connect to usb ports? do i need to have a displayport socket available on the graphics card?

XD version of the base releases 24tg
Forgive my ignorance, but what does that mean?

Also i was looking into those 43inch monitors, because they're VA panels, will they end up with ghosting issues? i was intending to use mine to for on as well as for gaming, work isnt really anything high-end but office tools. Will an excel spreadsheet look terrible on a VA panel?

That Acer Predator panel requires 2xdisplayports to give true 4K 144fps. The windforce gpu (understood that you're not recommending that one based on warranty period and i'll change that) has 3x DPs, presumably the Index doesnt require more than one DP?

Unless wanting to play two games simultaneously on same CPU, Zen2 will be getting old in single core performance before there's real use for 16 cores in gaming.
And already 3900X has enough cores for Intel to do catching.

Sorry, just to be clear, are you saying go with 3700X then? Zen3 CPU will be compatible with the "Gigabyte X570 GAMING X"? Therefore upgrade later to Zen3?

I'm undecided on what monitor at the moment.

i think i'll stick with the 2070 Super. i dont need 4k at the moment and when the next gen cards comes out along with the new CPU from amd, i can upgrade then.

so my £2500 rig + monitor costs is looking a bit more cost effective. I have a dell U2412M on my desk at the moment, which was good in its day but not going to be good enough for this rig.

when i linked thatt 165hz IPS monitor it was on sale, changed price at 12pm today. if you do order it, would seee if OOCUK could match that price, and point out this thread oon the forum

thanks @orbitalwalsh. i did have a look at that monitor when you linked a few days ago, i found an interesting comment that someone had said about the FI27Q and the FI27QP:

FI27Q has display port 1.2 and the p version has display port 1.4. If you don’t plan on using the hdr “which sucks on both monitors btw” then go with the non p version. But I bought both monitors and I found out something really interesting with both of them. So if hdr isn’t enable in Windows 10 it will be at 8 bit on both monitors “which is SDR”. 10 bit only kicks on with hdr on the desktop. Once you get into a game with hdr on it will go to 8 bit dithered. Even when hdr is set to on it will not go into 10 bit mode in games and only 8 bit dithered. Which both monitors can do at 165fps with Gsync. So you only take advantage of 165hz and 10bit HDR for desktop work... kind of a scam tbh to pay an extra hundred bucks to do 165hz HDR on google chrome and photo editing?. The non p version can run the 10 bit color but the frame rate has to be 120hz. Which is more than enough for anything you do outside of games. Once people read this they won’t feel so special anymore getting the p version....

@orbitalwalsh i read on tomshardware:
The image floats about 6 inches from the top of the desk, which is ideal when sitting about 3 feet away. Our peripheral vision was filled both vertically and horizontally, which is something you can’t achieve with an ultra-wide. But the 43-inch size means you can actually use this monitor on your desk, unlike larger BFGDs, which you have to sit further away from.

My current monitor (Dell U2412M) is 3 feet away, so i think i'll be ok. it'll look gigantic nevertheless. My small concern is the sharpness of text for example in excel as i intend to use it for work as well as gaming.

2080ti would run it perfectly ! You you know in say 2 gens time / 4 yes with a GPU swap y(if going for 2060super b) pushing it well ! And saved £600 odd !!!

have you got someone on your lap again, typing one handed? i'm sorry i didnt really understand this bit :)

I was going to hold off on the 2080ti and go for the 2070 super. i know it wont run the 43inch perfectly, but when the next gen gpu's come in, i'll be ready.

This is where i'm at:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £2,997.88 (includes shipping: £28.02)

Couple of questions:
  1. why the Team Group 8Pack Edition, rather than the Viper Steel 4400? is it down to cost? or i'm going to get the same speeds/latency/timings with the 8pack as i am the viper?
  2. Regarding overclocking, will I get some decent aircooled speeds from this set up?

Seta A1 case...rival to the 500DX

It's a lot more expensive as well @ ~£116 and they roughly similar in specification.

I'm having second thoughts about the Predator. Having read about the potential flickering and motion blur, i'm dubious. I might just stick with the Gigabyte AORUS FI27QP or LG's 27GL850, trusty IPS panel, i would have liked a bigger though.

OCUK have changed pricing of 2070Super GAMING OC in the space of a few hours

until i figure out what monitor i'm going to get, i'm not buying. i want it to arrive at the same time :) Though i'm not waiting two months for the index lead times :(

I'm not going to worry about a few quid here and there if it's convenient to buy it from one place.

Pull the trigger on the end ?

I havent yet. i was wondering if i ought to wait for the new MSI x570 tomahawk, which might be out in a couple of weeks. also, two of my items in the basket are out of stock, the case and the wifi card (msi mobo would negate the need for the wifi card).

Seen sale on with GPUs
Which card would that be? the 2070 super gaming? i'm not seeing the price having changed since you first suggested it...

EDIT: i have put the order in for the valve index though, given the lead time, i thought sooner the better.

EDIT2:

Basket so far:
