Info regarding UT3 on PS3 and 360 from Mark Rein

"Every game will work with every Xbox 360 system," a Microsoft spokesman told us.
I guess they may be going to go back on that statement then. I can understand how MS would want all games to be playable on every 360 sold, but they must get enormous pressure from developers to anable them to get the most out of the system.

FFXI and Football Manager required Hard Drives down to the size of the saves though if the larger 512MB memory cards were out I doubt they would have.

The 1UP story arose from a promotional screenshot of COD4 which showed a 'storage required' sticker on it. After the Sony hoards had thier field day it came to pass that the sticker was just a part of the concept art.(http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/07/23/cod4-storage-issue-clarified-not-required/)

I don't see this really as such a big deal and the only people harping on about it, quell surprise are a small PS3 faithful.

MS have given the license for MMRPGs to stipulate a mandatory HD (though we're not sure where this will apply) and at the end of the day for people not wanting to play the 1% of games that require the HD (maybe those casuals that made up the bulk of the PS2 audience who only wanted to play Madden or Fifa) surely the OPTION of not having to buy a HD is worthy.

As I've said before, it's easy for Sony to laud the HD card but the only real reason the HD is standard on the PS3 is because they couldn't get a 4x blu-ray drive ready on time and needed the cache.

.

Didnt they say the Storage required ment you either needed a memory card or hard drive to back up game data (big surprise).
Back to the HDD issue, i think in a year or 2 there will be no core and no 20 Gb premium 360's. With Microsoft pushing downloadable HD movies and TV surely the 13 Gb data on the drive is pretty useless, when you add on DLC for a couple of games and room to download HD movies. On a second note im sure Microsoft wont charge 360 owners for maps the PS3 has, much in the same way when the PS3 version of R6V came out both the DLC for it went free.

That's the one. Why would they put that sticker on the concept art anyway? The old saying, there's no smoke without fire, springs to mind.

I don't see it as a big deal either really, it's just an intersting talking point - or shall we only talk about the really important stuff from now on?

When you say 'PS3 faithful' you actually mean people who have a PS3???

So you don't think it was their plan to have a HDD from the offset then? I remember them issueing statements about the PS3 years ago and it always stated HDD iirc. I thought it was an obviouse way to go tbh and was suprised that MS dropped it from the Core SKU after it being mandatory in the original Xbox.

Yeah if you look at that icon it has a picture of a memory card, why the big fuss over that? I don't get it.

Who buys a 360 without a memory card and hard drive, you gotta have one of them or what's the point in buying the thing.

If that's the case then AT LEAST 1 of them should come bundled.

so it makes the console cheaper

not really a big deal when you pick a memory card up for £12 on ebay though

thats still less than £200 for games console with more graphical power than a £350 ps3

How costly do you think it would be to offer a game WITH a hard drive, packaged together. Like if GTA4 100% needed a hard disk, They release it with a hard disk.

I know its probably going to be costly in the beginning, but surely it would solve a lot of dev problems and so be a good move?

The drives probably cost them far less than £20 but the end customer would be looking at at least £90 for the game and drive.

Like the PS2 and Gamecube came with memory cards?
Well that was in the days whne memory was for game saves only, we're talking downloadable content/game space here.

But they still didn't come with any form of saving games.

Someone was saying that the 360 should come with one of either a mem card or a hard drive. I was merely making the point that they're hardly bucking a trend by not.

No you're right it's the same as it's always been, some kind of onboard flash memory of say 1GB wouldn't go a miss I don't think.

Could you see any possibility in it?

Maybe do it an alternative way? Like an MS game offering the drive.

A bit like Sony are doing with their consoles, no price drop, but they offered an extra pad or games on top. I believe they were Sony games? So they could afford to cut into their own profits. In order to move units.

Profit loss for the greater good so to speak.

FYI i may be talking crap as i'm not too knowledgeable in business affairs :p

I doubt they'd ever do it as the drives are readily available and already cover most of the market. It's not another N64 expansion pack affair.

I totally agree. Even the Saturn had some onboard memory for saving games. I'm sure they could do it quite easily, but then miss out on revenue from the sales of memory cards.

PS3 Unreal Tournament exclusivity in doubt due to potential delays

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Epic's Mark Rein has cast doubt on whether Unreal Tournament 3 will be a timed exclusive afterall after he offered 'no guarantee' that the PS3 and PC version will make its proposed November release. Rein commented that the team is taking a get it right over a getting it right now approach so there is no definite guarantee that the game will ship for PS3 in November. Providing all is well on 360, the potential delay on PS3 could see a near simultaneous release on both platforms.

Quote:
But any delays would see the shooter slip dangerously close to its release on Xbox 360 in early 2008.

"We do not know exactly when the game will be completed," wrote Rein on Epic's official forums.

"All we've said is that we're hoping for a November release, but as you know we value getting it right over getting it right now, so there's no guarantee of that," he said.

A post late last week by Rein on Unreal Tournament 3’s official forums had cast a shadow of doubt over the game’s proposed November release date for the PlayStation 3 and PC versions of the game.

“We do not know exactly when the game will be completed,” he wrote. “All we've said is that we're hoping for a November release but as you know we value getting it right over getting it right now so there's no guarantee of that.”

But he explained to Next-Gen in an e-mail that his statement is somewhat misconstrued.

“Nothing has changed at this point. We're working toward a November release,” Rein said in an e-mail. “The point of my forum comment was not to cast doubt on our plans but rather to debunk the countdown timer on a German fan site that listed a specific release date.

“We don't know the specific release date yet and I think it is always prudent to remind our fans that we value quality over release date. They've come to expect that from UT and we don't want them to think we're handling UT3 any differently.”

There was much ballyhoo during Sony Computer Entertainment’s E3 press conference about how UT3 would be an exclusive to PS3 (on a console basis) during 2007. The game, published by Chicago-based Midway, is also slated for release on PC this year, with an Xbox 360 version to follow in 2008.

“Midway had a bunch of consumer press folks out to play multiplayer on PS3 last week in New York and we had thousands of gamers playing on two 16-player PC LANs at Leipzig a few weeks ago. Much fun was had at both events so I think we're in pretty good shape but there's always lots to do to get a game like this ready to ship,” Rein said.
