With regards to job applications. When you've been invited to an "informal chat" what would this entail? Would the full interview attire be required, for example?

Don't suit up. Smart casual - shirt but no tie, decent trousers (smart maybe, but not with a crease you could shave with) and any decent shoes you have that aren't black, polished & shiny. You don't want to give the impression you're an anally retentive billy-no-mates. Think dressing to meet your girlfriend's parents. Not if your girlfriend's trashy.

It means it's not a 'formal interview', but I wouldn't say refers to dress code at all. Suit up - you can always take off your tie/jacket but you can't spirit one out of nowhere.

I've had this when applying for a job at an Off License... The manager just had a chat with me about it all works, it wasn't like an interview at all. :)

It's not a formal interview but it should be treated as one. Go as you went for the interview (perhaps a different tie if applicable) and treat it as such. It's not worth loosing out on a job now. Informal chat normally means to check if you're not a monster before offer.

my last interview was called informal. What the guy did was basically ask me questions about myself rather than my technical ability. I suppose the idea was to see if I would fit in with the current employees. Also he then explained about what I would be expected to do and then it was over.

My interview for my local pub was effectively an informal chat. Imagine its more to just find out what you are like as a person and decide whether they think they can put up with you ;)

From my experience this will mean a general chat about you, the job and the company to see if you're the right candidate before bringing you back for a technical interview.

My advice would be to go suited and booted with a folder of information about the job and company (it also looks good ;)) and a list of questions that would aid you in finding out what you'll be getting your self into.

I would say full suit, like the others have said you can always take it off. It's unlikely you'll make a bad impression if overdressed, but it could easily be perceived as you not making the effort if your underdressed.

I'm sure as long as he doesn't turn up naked he'll be fine... ;)

Completely depends on the job environment. I had an informal chat with a senior manager and partner after an interview for a different department (ended up full) at an Accounting firm. I went in the same suit as for the interview, full gear.

They just chatted about how University was going, what I had planned for the summer, rugby league, football and that's about it haha.
