Inline Skating

Fair enough, still looks good fun though :)

It most certainly is... and as for non checking, have you seen some of the senior teams play, pretty much guaranteed a brawl with most teams. I've been playing around 10 years now, and even in the beer leagues theres a good amount of fighting. From my point of view as a goalie, I find ice hockey easier to play than inline.

Yup I am a senior and whilst the rules are non checking doesn't mean it doesn't happen, you just get your 2 minutes for boarding or whatever :p

For some reason the other teams down here don't like us on pitch, we never start anything but something usually kicks off on out games :)

Do you play in BIPHA at all?

I played my first season in BIPHA last year, I joined a team in Central B, my normal team is strictly a beer league team so we mainly play friendlies and one off games / tournaments, but its a good bunch of guys.. varies wildly in ability and age though. My BIPHA team has just folded, and given that the leagues and stuff are so badly run up here, im not looking for another. We're based out of Rotherham, love the sports court / virtual ice surface though. Now I've passed the magic age of 35, Im going to start looking into finding a proper vets team.

I'm not impressed with BIPHA tbh, the way the south west league is run could be better but with only 4 senior teams this year they've not got much to work with!

When i started playing it was all about BSHA :)

What's it like at virtual ice/simply skate then, am there in 2 weeks for the nationals.

We will come last and get thrashed every game, but will be fun :)

We were talking about a vets team the other day as a couple of us are over 30, but most of the team are quite a bit younger :(

I'd agree not to go to any skateparks until you're pretty nimble on the street in general, the ramps are a whole other beast.

I spent 3 years skating and still have my original Razor Murda's; those were the days.

I realise in hindsight that it actually kept me extremely fit and wish I'd never stopped as my joints just couldn't take it after a year out!

Razor Murdas were seriously rare! I always wanted a pair.

I had Razor Stockwells with custom frames.

I used to think I was quite good jumping 360's down steps and grinding hand rails, but then I went to the Brixton Beach and realised I was in fact completely crap :p

Used to go to a skatepark every Saturday morning as a kid
Best to practice on flat ground first, go out every day for a week or so just to get the hang of gliding smoothly. Similar to ice skating but probably a bit easier

I used to skate when i was growing up. I could grind and go on half pipes, do black flips. Ok maybe not backflips but i could go on the half pipes etc.

I went to southend on the weekend (what a **** hole) but i saw a guy on skates going along the beach front and thought that sounds like a good idea. I enjoyed skating and would like to do it again.

Looks like South West is as well run as Central then... Central were allowing teams to join halfway through the season, and other teams to fold partway through the season, it was mental.

BSHA is still really popular up here, I prefer pucks to balls though :)

Have you skated on the virtual ice surface before ?.. if not, its pretty slick, much gentler on wheels than either the wooden or tiled surfaces at other rinks, but it does take a bit of getting used to, the puck moves well on it, and I think its fairly close to ice, stopping is entertaining, though as a goalie, not much of an issue for me.

Used to skate for around 8 years. Went to most of the big skate parks in the UK in my time. Haven't touched them for a number of years now though.
But a really fun and cheap sport to get in to.
Expect some nasty injuries especially when starting out.

Went out on skates for a whole 15 minutes today, just out of interest. As expected, have forgotten everything. Will need to find some folk around here that can teach me the way.

We had about 8 or 10 teams 2 seasons ago, went down to just 5 last year, and 4 this year :(

Played in BSHA back in the day, from about '89 to '95. We started out playing in LASH before they started up a south west league swash.

Never been on virtual ice, we've got an hour booked the night before to get us a bit familiar with it :) Although our goalie can't make that session, are you able to slide a bit like on ice? He was moaning the other week about how as a goalie he can't slide as there's no ice lol.

Really looking forward to it, although can't see us playing any hockey on the Sunday as we'll be knocked out by then :p
