in's and out's of changing your name?

Yeah teacher's always called me Sinister (my surname is Simister) [...]
Snap! Well, nearly :) My surname is Simisker. Don't get the 'Sinister' much, which is surprising considering I'm a bit of a gothy type.

I changed it from the one I was born with about 15 years ago. Didn't have driving licence or passport, and didn't need to do the whole deed poll thing - the main sticking point was with National Insurance, but once that was sorted and I had an official card with my 'new' name on, informing utilities, banks etc was straightforward.

The Student Loans Company took a bit of convincing, but a series of sarky letters made them see that there was no point not accepting my name change.

OP: while Diplock isn't too bad, if you want a new surname - go for it. I don't regret mine for a millisecond :)

I had to setup a user account for an American bloke whos last name is W**klin, the *'s are 'an' for those who need to ask. What made it worse was the format we used to standardise all the usernames.

First 4 letters from the surname and inital from their first name.

His first name was Russell so his username was

W**NKR

Why do you think about the courts in Northern Ireland?

The Diplock Courts were the first (in modern times at least) in the UK to dispense with the right to trial by jury i.e. a judge would decide the case only to reduce the possiblity of intimidation. Legal matters are a sometime interest of mine so that's partly why I make the association.

Diplock is an amazing surname

Especially if you're a pirate. YAAARRR I'M THE DREADED CAP'N DIPLOCK.

Maybe I'm just being juvenile...
