in's and out's of changing your name?

Kyle Diplock runs very well off the tongue. Don't change it. :)

Thanks

I immediately think of the courts in Northern Ireland when I hear that name. Do you have a middle name that you might use instead? I know a few people who go by their middle name rather than their given name.

Why do you think about the courts in Northern Ireland?

@RandomTom - to give you some of the story that links into what you are saying, when I was born I took on my mothers maiden name (her fathers/my grandads surname)

I am his first and only grandson and I am extremely special to him because of that. He was one of 7 brothers all killed in the war, he has 4 children all girls so I am the only person that can carry on his family name and although he has never said anything I know its very important to him that I carry this on, the more I type this the more I realise just how important it is to both him and myself that I do keep his name.

It would upset him deeply if he found out I had changed it.

Well if nothing else atleast this thread has made me realise the importance of keeping his name going.

Diplock's fine.

Sales guy rang the other week whose name was actually John Thomas, I asked 'Sorry what's your name again?' and his voice shook a little! People like him are the real poor sods of this world, they should be allowed to change their names with at least a discounted price!

I'm impressed with the maturity level displayed in this thread I thought it had the potential to dissolve into childish chit chat.

Not sure if places like DVLA would charge if you changed your name on license or if it costs to change a name on your passport etc.

Wow, people seem very against changing your name, Shakespeare had it right, you can change the name of something, but its still the same thing. I did change my name, over 15 years ago. I changed from my fathers surname to my mothers. I've seen him maybe 3 times since I was 11, at funerals (My Grandparents), and my Nieces christening. As you'd guess I've never had any regrets.

I cannot comment on the paperwork work costs, as at the time I didn't have a passport or driving licence. The passport office did require a copy of my Birth Certificate and the Deed Poll when I applied, and once I had that it was easy to use all that as ID for getting all the other things.

kylediplock.com / kylediplock.co.uk are both freely registerable.

This is pretty random / cool too: "Diplock surname meaning: (English) Dweller at the Deep Lake [Old English deop + lacu]. "

I guess you may lose a sense of personal identity if you change your name?

I think Diplock is fine.

Maybe Kyle Locke if you have to change it, then shave your head and get a wheelchair for fancy dress parties :)

I changed my surname from Stott to Gyte.

Stott was my mothers married name and her husband was no relation to me (never even met him), whereas Gyte was her maiden name so I changed it to that on the basis that IF I ever have kids they will get her/my family name and not her married name.

Cost about 50 quid iirc.

Diplock isn't that bad I agree, but if you do decide to change it, change it to Gyte!!!

There isn't many of us in this world!! :D :D

OP has it easy. I know a fella with the surname Megahed, pronounced (apparently) Meg-ah-hee. Sufice to say he has always and will always be known as Mega-Head
