Insomnia.

I only smoke weed when I need to
And I need to get some rest
I confess, I burnt a hole in the mattress
Yes, yes, it was me, I plead guilty
And on the count of three I pull back the duvet
Make my way to the refrigerator
One dry potato inside, no lie
Not even bread, jam
When the light above my head went bam!
I can't sleep, something's all over me
Greasy, insomnia please release me
And let me dream about making mad love on the heath
Tearing off tights with my teeth
But there's no relief
I'm wide awake in my kitchen
It's dark and I'm lonely
Oh, if I could only get some sleep
Creeky noises make my skin creep
I need to get some sleep
I can't get no sleep....

Boring.

I find having my TV on with a low volume helps, too. I also tend to have a fan on, preferably aiming at me. This tends to make my eyes try, making me want to close them and tricking myself into thinking I'm actually tired. It works pretty well to be honest; I find it very difficult to get to sleep without my fan now!

There are quite a few relaxation CDs with techniques that can help you get off to sleep which work for some people. They can involve guided visualisation, muscle relaxation, breathing techniques or a combination.

Also white noise can also help, for example an untuned radio at a low volume or a fan whirring in the room. As mentioned, tv at a low volume can also help but low enough that you youre not actually istening to it.

Another thing: don't try to sleep. Just get into bed and if it happens, it happens.

I wasn't an insomniac, but sometimes sat around for an hour or so before dropping off, I found:

No coffee or tea ever, coke is in the same basket (any caffeine).

Bit of exercise doesn't go amiss, although not before bed - hour or so at least before sleeping.

Radio 2/3/ whatever has some jazz on. I put it on my TV with the screen hidden (Press 0 on freeview radio viewer to give a black screen), then put a 1hr sleep timer which turns the tv off after that time.

Stick an album on the PC such as Arcade Fire - Funerals. Then use a winamp plugin, such as "Winamp Timer". This has options to shut down the PC once the playlist has finished, or at a certain time. This stops the humming keeping you up, and Arcade fire are pretty relaxing.

If this doesn't work, perhaps a chillout webradio station. I favour Groovesalad, which seems to put me into a trance.

Open a window so that the room is cold, but wrap up with an extra duvet or something. Being very warm in a cold room is great.

Regular bedtimes. Whenever this is, just don't fluctuate.

Few beers before bed does it for me. Just give it 30 mins before you head upstairs otherwise you'll wake up needing to pee like a pregant woman :D.

yep milk has a substance that helps sleeping, i use to do that too around 30min before going to bed i'd do a hot milk with a bit of honey(yummy :D) then read my book for a few mins then usually sleep well. I must say tho that it doesn't always work.

I have problems to sleep sometimes as well i searched a little bit the net to see "tips", the most important thing i would say is not to be too hard on it, if you always keep thinking, "ergh i cant sleep" you actually wont sleep ;)

I also read that creating some sort of "ritual" before going to bed helps a lot. Like for me drinking a hot milk, then reading a little bit in bed, so your body knows "Ahh it's soon time to sleep!" Also going to sleep at the same time everyday helps apparently!

I hope this helps, dont get too worried about it tho because it gets worse then, just try to be really relaxed when going to bed and not nervous about it because you gamed 10min before or watched a violent movie! Don't know if i'm really clear but i tried ;)

as a long term insomnia sufferer (due to anxiety disorder) this is spot on.... if you cant sleep the absolute worse thing you can do is lie there and think about it. get up and do something and try again in half hour. dont eat anything before bed and have like a cut off time at least 3 hours before you plan to go up. Also, like Leodido says, create a ritual, i HAVE to read a book before bed and if i dont, i aint sleeping ^^

I thought i had insomnia for a while and still have trouble sleeping but i think i just wasn't doing anything in the day to make me want to sleep. Now i have a full time job and excercise it only takes me around 30-60 mins to get to sleep but before it would take 2-3 hours
