Insomnia!

I've battled for years with not sleeping well, particularly when I'm anxious, paranoid or stressed about things.

This is my fifth night this week I've gone to bed at 11pm, not felt like I've slept because my brains going crazy and ended up wide awake at 2am. Give up at 230am, go downstairs, make a camomile, drink it and try and reset.

I try to not have any screen time when I'm like this for obvious reasons but I end up trying to distract myself with projects so it does happen.

I'm particularly wound up and down about work situations at the moment and it feels like everything is doomed, it happens to everyone I get it. I just wish I could at least get a decent night's sleep. Nothing worse than already feeling at risk, then going into work the next day not feeling like you can do your best because you're tired.

Sometimes I think 3 hours a night may just be enough for me.

What do you do to cope with situations like this?

Maybe think more about the things that are winding you up and the negativety and what can be done about those things.
Sleeping issues are common. I have issues myself, usually after 4 hours sleep. Seems common among family members too as they age. I feel I need less sleep now but 4 isn't great. I've not been so bad for last year. I had a cancer scare and urgent operation in May last year. While it turned out to not be cancer the panic of the situation has maybe made me think a little differently. When I wake up early now I usually get to sleep again, albeit after laying awake for a while. I tend to think along the lines of "life can be short, I should be enjoying the moment(sleep time) not thinking about the day ahead".

Anyway, while there are many reasons people having trouble sleepig, it's often psychological. Restful mind, restful sleep.
Apparently many years ago it was normal to have a nights sleep in two stages. People even went to visit neighbours for munchies :) before returning home for the second stage.
Not read this through but seems to cover the topic

Insomnia is an industrial disease.

Before industrialisation. Peoples lives, and sleep cycles, were regulated by daylight and the seasons.

After industrialisation they were regulated by the clock.

For most people, this is really not a very good thing at all.

i have mild insomnia, has got worse with age and more worries as you get older
job, family, why am i here kind of stress :o
my problem is waking at 2/3/4 am and not getting back to sleep
i would stick a podcast or something on which can help, it's not ideal though (look for 'boring books for bedtime' podcast)
exercise is a good one for tiring you out. no caffeine the usual things. they do say to get up and do something like you have but i can never drag myself out of bed, too cosy :p
i'm probably lucky to get 5hrs of REM sleep a night . i've been a worrier all my life so unlikely to change much now.
have you tried going to bed even earlier, say 10pm see if you can squeeze in an extra hr rest?

I get this occasionally and its caused by stress. I started a new job in December and i was out of my comfort zone for the first few weeks led to a few nights with 3-4 4 hrs sleep. Its horrible but i soldiered on and got through it ok.

When im chilled i can drink coffee ect before bed and it has little effect. Stress is definitely a sleep stopper.

Therapist told me
Don't read, or watch TV in bed
If not asleep within 30 minutes
Get up do some stuff
Go back to bed
Doesn't work for me though
I just start becoming more awake
Around 10pm always have done
Regardless of anything

Benzodiazepines, pregabalin, mirtazapine, citalopram etc. make me fall asleep very quickly, they don't cause cross tolerance so you can rotate between them everyday. You need to see a doctor tbh.

just amazed this thread has not been locked yet...... so many meds getting mentioned lol

guess were on a roll and my gout keeps me awake as well and i have allopurinal for that, then i can continue to eat meat and mackerel, and drink :p
