So it begins. Uses a Yoti service whereby you are verified via a video so no ID is required to be uploaded.

Meta, which owns Instagram, says the technology cannot identify anything about users except their age and it and Yoti will delete images once this has been done.

"
Anyone trying to edit their date of birth from that of an under-18 to that of an over-18 must verify their age.
But now, users have the option to record a video of themselves that will be analysed by age-estimation technology, instead of uploading ID."

Seems like signing up for a new account circumvents everything.

How is it possible for this to be in any way accurate? I mean it can be tough at times as a human to pinpoint someone's age. I can't see how an AI could possibly determine this, accurate down to the year.

Why do humans still think humans (who would need to be in an economic scenario where determining whether folks are under 13 by looking at them is a job) would be more effective than a computer in 99% of cases?

Let's hope these age verification systems are better than the last attempts.

The first time age verification was in action it managed to get itself involved in a massive illegal websites/images network investigation and closed down.

The second time, a company that was allowing underage material to be posted on their site was offering to be the age verifier.
