They are not collecting it. It sounds like it's processed on the fly by AI.
On the app itself?

How is it possible for this to be in any way accurate? I mean it can be tough at times as a human to pinpoint someone's age. I can't see how an AI could possibly determine this, accurate down to the year.
So it begins. Uses a Yoti service whereby you are verified via a video so no ID is required to be uploaded.

Called it!I've just found something in the Yoti app that states the following. It looks like the app itself does store a photo but I'm not sure IF Instagram does while checking it via AI. Guess someone would need to read the small print when it comes.
Internal Research
When we take a face scan, we also store a seperate photo as part of research to improve our technology. We do this to help ensure yoti products are always safe to use. You can opt out by going to More > My Data > Consent.
Why do humans still think humans (who would need to be in an economic scenario where determining whether folks are under 13 by looking at them is a job) would be more effective than a computer in 99% of cases?
Yeah, Meta totally won’t keep and use that data for their own benefit, will they?
I'm not sure it cares about an 18 year old with a 19 year old, but it reckons it can reasonably (within a 1 year tolerance) spot whether someone is clearly over 18 or under 13.I totally understand that AI is better than us at many things, but guessing someone's age based on a video/picture of their face, when there is no definiable quality or features that could differentiate an 18 year old from a 19 year old? I don't buy it. Everyone develops and matures at different rates/times so it would logically be impossible for either a human or AI to guess someone's age within the year with perfect accuracy, based on a picture or video.

Impossible (to a degree of accuracy) but hardly the end of the world if a few 18 y/o's get binned or a few 17 y/os slip through. It is just a risk based approach that mitigates hiring equally unqualified humans.I agree that this sounds feasible. I can't see how it could ever be accurate when it came to proper age verification (ie when it needs to guess if someone is 17 or 18 - would be impossible).
Another thing it looks like it's coming to a lot of other platforms....

Digital passports have been a thing for years!Holy crap I never knew this. Your passport contains a chip with your details and your photo stored in it! I thought it was just paper.
I've signed up to this yoti so I can find more info about it and it asked me to place my phone on my passport, closed, and it read the data inside the chip.
Yeh.... this is a gov thing for sure!
