Just a question about whether you can copy the install CD from XPPro to a partition and then boot from it? Will this make the install process quicker?

(make partition bootable and copy all files over?)

I know you can do it on the Mac by making a small partition and then using "Restore" in diskutil

yep but you'll need a bootable DOS to execute winn32.exe (or whatever its called) in the i386 folder from anywhere seperate partition, USB, network etc

Right just had a quick look on msfn and if I'm right the following options are available

1) Boot from USB pen and navigate to drive and run the winnt32.exe

2) run the winnt32.exe from within an exisiting installation.

quite the opposite. it will be much slower than booting from a cd.

I don't see the validity in that. I've installed OSX from a HD partition and that waaaaayyyyyy quicker than from the DVD, so I don't see why this should be any different.

OK so it is dictated by the write speed of the drives as my RAID0 raptors just tore through an install.:p

Indeed. Modern-day Hard Drives are *way* slower than cdrom drives

and? what's that got to do with anything?

this isn't about hardware or simple file copy operations. it's about how windows setup works. you obviously haven't run it from the command line yourself. if you did, you'd know it's much less flexible and far slower than booting from cd.

are you taking the ****? :D

what has the way OS X works got to do with anything? i give up, i really do..... :o

Not intentionally :p; it just when I did this I thought "This'd be a great idea if I could do this for Windows." hence why I asked the question.

quickest way to install is via RIS on a gigabit network (quickest semi-viable home option :p)

afaik, the usb install on msfn is fast, there's a members project for it i'm yet to use it though

personally, i make an acronis image of a fresh install and use that

i have to say, the time windows takes to install is pretty irrelevant for me to even think about ways of cutting it down. it's installing all the drivers/junk/updates afterwards that takes all the time.... :p

I'd say it's much faster than installing from CD... the install copies loads of small files, which owns your CD drive.

The other month I installed XP into a virtual machine from an ISO on the same drive... it copied the files really fast.

what planet are you on?

i'm talking about installing windows. :/

I know..

Unless I've read your posts wrong, you're saying that installing from CD is faster than installing from HDD, which is what your posts imply you think..

either tell me I read your posts wrong, or link your source.

maybe i'm doing it wrong. please could you share your experience of installing windows via winnt.exe and how come it's faster than using a bootable cd. :)
