Ok my friend has given me his laptop to try and install xp on it from the disks supplied with the computer. Problem is the internal CD drive is not working. So some how I need to get an external CD drive to work. The bios does not support boot from USB so I am a bit stuck. I have tried to find a bootable floopy that will give me usb cd support but so far no luck. Even if I did get this to work I am not sure how I would boot the re-install CD. Any ideas.

Thanks in advance for your help

How about taking the hard drive out and plugging it into another computer and installing it from there..and then plugging the hard drive back into the laptop when done and then install chipset drivers etc when plugged into laptop.

If I was you I'd just get the drive replaced. They aren't expensive and it should be easy enough to change.

If the machine is old enough not to support booting from USB then the drive is most likely IDE. OcUK has a drive listed that would probably fit for £12.64.

What model of laptop is it?
