I'm a newbie thats doing my first build, ive got a Samsung 830 series SSD thats going in my system to be the boot drive, i was trying to find out some info on the internet as to how you install it properly.

I came across some people saying you need to change the bios to AHCI and some saying that IDE is ok, to be honest i aint got a clue what both are and what they do.

Do i need to change any settings in the bios before installing windows 7 and what should it be set as, AHCI or IDE ? Or do i just install windows first and change the settings later ?

if your motherboard has the ahci option then yes set to that, its quicker for ssd's than ide

if you dont have ahci option then you can only use ide mode

I just ordered one too! Saw this guide in another thread : http://thessdreview.com/ssd-guides/optimization-guides/the-ssd-optimization-guide-2/2/ Thanks Virdi.

Just go into BIOS and set SATA mode to AHCI, it's much better. IDE is ancient and will restrict certain functions. I have managed to change it after installing but it's completely backwards and you would have to change it in BIOS afterwards anyway lol. I remember when I first changed to AHCI it was for Native Command Queuing.

Nice motherboard, let me know how it runs? I got sata II still but the SSD was a great price and I will still see a performance increase.

As far as I have read, you just change to AHCI and install like a normal hard drive if you have Windows 7. I think with Vista or older you need to load the right drivers etc.

Brian, i'm a total newbie lol, i doubt i'd be able to tell you about any obvious performance related things to do with the motherboard, its my first build, i'm just hoping i can get all the hardware in and get it all working :D

YES,otherwise you have to reinstall windows if you dont

Actually, I think you can change to AHCI in registry then reboot and set it to AHCI in BIOS. I have done it before but it's backwards, I only did it because I didn't know about AHCI when I first got a Sata drive.

theres three sets of sata ports

two intel sata3
two marvell sata3
and four intel sata2

you want your ssd on the first INTEL sata3 port, the marvell wont be as fast/reliable
any hdd's or dvd drives put them on the intel sata2 ports

theres also two options in the bios to set ahci ones for the marvell ports which you dont want and ones for the intel sata3 ports which you need to set to ahci

@BrianB yes thats true but if your starting out fresh its simpler to set it first and then install windows ect

Haha, I started with a P4 3.2GHz on a P4C800-E Deluxe with £170 DDR RAM and a X800 that cost me £270. XD Was amazing. Technology advanced a bit since then... for less money you are getting an amazing system!

Just put it all together and don't forget to plug in the 8pin power adapter near the CPU socket, common first mistake. :P

First thing I always do because I'm paranoid is check the BIOS hasn't done anything uncanny with the settings, such as having onboard sound/graphics enabled or odd temperatures etc.

There is some other settings that are good to have enabled to do with 64-bit operating system and I'm sure you will find them when you start exploring it.

its upto you,you can go to gigabytes website and download from there but those on tweaktown are usually a good few months newer

win7 will find/install all drivers for you, just update the chipset drivers and intel rst drivers

Ive got some drivers on my flash drive from the Gigabyte site

I selcted windows 7 64 bit and downloaded everything that was on the list, is that all i need ?

Whats the VIA USB 3 driver ? Its just there is an intel USB 3 driver next to it ? Do you need both ?
