Installing An Arctic Accelero Xtreme III To A HIS R9 290.

You might want to remove competitors names/links before you get a slap on the wrist.:)

On the subject of sourcing an Extreme, my 5870 Extreme is sitting on my 290(X) with a bracket from AC I got to fit it onto a 7950, all the non specific Extremes should fit if my old 5870 does, it's been on 5870/6950/7950 and now this 290(X) what a purchase@£37 when the Extremes first came out!:D

Hey guys !

Hopefully someone can help me.

I just got my alpenfohn vga chip heatsinks and xtreme 3 (even though xtreme 4 is coming out in a few days, FML).

First of all - how do I "reuse" the termal tape thats already on the cooler? I'm a total noob when it comes to this, so please explain it like I'm five. I don't want to use the epoxy/glue, cant make this permanent.

I saw some thermal pads in the arctic's bundle for xtreme 3 - http://www.arctic.ac/eu_en/accelero-xtreme-iii.html

Do i use that instead of the existing thermal pads? Is there enough for all the heatsinks?

Now, according to this picture:

Note A: Is the selection and placement on this picture correct? http://i.imgur.com/Qb73sGv.jpg

Note B: I need to use the largest alpenfohn heatsinks around the GPU die, except for note B. See http://i.imgur.com/Qb73sGv.jpg - is this the correct placement/selection?

Note c: Tall but thin ones from alpenfohn right? What about thermal tape, do i use the one provided by alpenfohn for the long cooler (the thin long strip) and apply it whole (without cutting into small parts) or do i reuse the existing ones?

Note D: Where did you get the termal tape? Did you reuse it from the existing cooler or had some extra from somewhere?

Not quite sure what you mean? The thermal tape already on the AAXIII? There shouldn't be any! Or the tape from the existing (old) cooler? This probably won't be 'sticky' enough to mount the new ones with...

Looks good to me, but watch that bottom ram sink doesn't fowl the XtremeIII!

You look to be using the AAXIII ramsinks according to your pictures, not the alpenfohn? In which case they will fit below the cooler.

I'd use the one supplied and apply it whole as the long heatsink covers the whole area.

Note D: Where did you get the termal tape? Did you reuse it from the existing cooler or had some extra from somewhere?

Probably purchased separately.

I fitted the AAXIII to a 7970 over the weekend and getting temp problems, after reading the arctic site it sounds like my card needs a shim so gonna track one down this evening! :)

Shim fitted (OcUK did eventually get them in stock lol)

My 7970 with a good overclock mining which previously hit 80 degrees at 80%+ fanspeed making a hell of a noise with the reference blower cooler!

Now 50 degrees and near silent even at 100% fanspeed... Which isn't required with this cooler!

I'm impressed! :)

This is great news ,,,
Just one question ,Why do you use glue to fix the small heat sinks and not those thermal pad things that i have seen used on some stock cards

cheer s

The AAXIII comes with 'thermal glue' rather than thermal pads. In my experience the glue/epoxy will have much better thermal properties (and heat transfer) than any sticky pad! :)

I am too scared to try this lol with my butter fingers I'm bound to do some damage... I would love a MK-26 but can't pluck up the courage to start hacking away at my card. I'd pay someone else to do it but I don't know anyone that I would trust to do it.

The thermal glue the AAXIII isn't like superglue - the heatsinks do come off if you accidentally catch them with something (like a fan cable) after they're 'set'...

Hey SimonKa, where did you buy your alpenfohn heatsinks from? (pm me, as you're not allowe to mention competitors).
I've been looking for them everywhere, but nowhere is in stock!

thanks!
