My old hd which i used for my new build has just failed, it doesnt boot up anymore, iv went and bought a cheap 120gb hard drive just so i can get the os back on that. Iv never installed a OS on a new HD before.

what should i do?

is it as simple as replaceing old, starting up with OS disc in it and it will install?

Yes - though when you get to the point where you get an option for format the drive it might be worthwhile doing a full NTFS format rather than a quick as I've had problems with this in the past - why I don't know.

running a full NTFS or FAT format also does a checkdisk at the same time so should find/flag up any bad sectors etc where as a quick format just rewrites the MBR

Iv run into a problem, i put it so i can boot the cd room first, put my cd in and nothing happens. no format etc

iv been told i need a floppy drive for something :/ can somebody please tell me step by step on what to do?

Theres

Booting from Disc ...

and it just sits there doing nothing.
Bios picks up the hard drive no problem, MSI winki is on my flash drive and its working well, that came from the MSI disc.

im now downloading new sata raid drivers for my motherboard. How can i install if i have no operateing system ( i dont see ways of installing things on msi winkie )

ok just downloaded sata raid drivers, but MSI WINKI doesn't open zip files.

im getting annoyed here.

i also tried installing 7 via winki, it comes up @ the volume Windows 7 uses the udf file format system which is not supportedby your system@

OK I am a touch confused... you shouldn't need any SATA drivers at all with Windows 7 - XP SP2 could handle SATA HDDs, 7 definitely can. Also, it seems you haven't even started the Windows installation yet so the HDD is not the issue.

Are you positive the Windows DVD works? You can run it inside Windows, so load it up on another computer and see if runs OK. If not you probably have a broken DVD. Are you also using the right disc? The 64bit DVD wont work on a 32bit computer. I'd be surprised if this was the problem as almost any computer from the last few years should be 64 bit.

You can also try booting the DVD in another computer and see if it runs the setup. The setup should make absolutely no changes to your computer [it can't until you choose which HDD you want and before that screen you know if it works or not!]. If you see it doing stuff - ie says "Loading Setup Files" or similar you know the DVD works fine. Although it wont make changes I will cover my arse anyway and say At Your Own Risk! :)

did everything you said, put disc in and it booted from the disc from another pc, and it also started to install when logged on.
everything works fine..i find it annoying that all the MSI discs work fine, but when putting the windows 7 disc in it doesnt...
im gunna go back to the shop where i bought it from and ask for a replacement. its full retail.
