Glad you're sorted mate, I've never bothered to put different images on different screens, but hope you can work it out. In fact, if you do can you let me know?
The last time I checked (and that was a long time ago) it's rather difficult to do with compiz and gnome. You'll probably find that the screenshots with different backgrounds on different desktops are all of kde and not gnome. With kde the default window manager supports full compositing so to get the cube and multiple backgrounds requires only a few clicks.
It might be doable in gnome nowadays. I'd be curious to hear if anyone has managed it
It's pre-installed on Mint, enable cube effects then go back a tab and select 'cube' or 'cylinder', and it should work with the default ctrl + alt + mouse click.
