so to summerise

1.my cd is set to boot first
2.I have set the new drive to master as per instrutions
3.removed the old drive and fitted the new in its place with same connections
4.checked the bios regonises the drive
5.tried to boot with xp os
6.i get an error message on black boot up screen = "error loading operating system"

not sure about the set to auto thing in bios that was mentioned though

cheers

That normally happens if it doesn't boot off the CD - it will look for Windows on your hard disk (which it can't find), so comes up with that error.

Does the CD spin up on boot? It should come up with 'starting windows' or similar or 'press any key to boot from cd'. As you have two optical drives - maybe try it in the other one? Some motherboards will only start off one of the two optical drives, if set that way in the bios.

I found this

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326676

SYMPTOMS
When you restart your computer after the file-copy portion of Windows XP Setup, you may receive the following error message:
Error loading operating system

CAUSE
This issue may occur if your computer BIOS does not correctly manage or support the capacity of the hard disk on which you are installing Windows XP.

RESOLUTION
Warning This article contains steps that may involve changing your BIOS or complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings or that may require you to make physical changes to your computer hardware. Incorrect changes to the BIOS of your computer may create serious problems. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that result from changes to your BIOS can be resolved. Change your BIOS settings at your own risk. If you need help with any of these steps, contact your hardware manufacturer and note that making either hardware or BIOS changes to your computer may invalidate your warranty. If you do not want to make hardware changes to your computer, you can take your computer to a repair center.

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods: • Make sure that you are using the latest BIOS revision for your computer. Contact the computer manufacturer to inquire about how to obtain and install the latest BIOS update that is available for the computer.
• If you are using an IBM computer with an AWARD BIOS version 4.5x, visit the following IBM Web site:

If you unplug your hard drive completely and set cd to boot, XP will still boot from the cd. The screen goes blue (the good kind) and it loads the drivers it needs to run into your ram. It will then ask if you want to install and look for a hard drive.

Since you are not even getting this it seems the problem is not the hard drive. Try unplugging it completely as above. I also agree with what Duke said about the optical drive. Your bios will have selected which one to run off. Stick the cd in the other one!

We will deal with that in a bit. Basically your motherboard may not support HDDs over 130GB. But you have not got to that bit yet......You might have to flash your BIOS but that is not advisable unless necessary

I have tried in both cd and dvd drives

'press any key to boot from cd' did appear but then in seconds disapered and was replaced by the error message,,,, i managed to hit any key before it disapeared and it went through the loading proceedure with blue screen till it started the loading page were it as to go to 100% in yellow

this took about 45 mins which is too long i think ,, then i got a message saying that it could not load windows and it may be a damaged os disc,,,, or i may need to set the bois funchion to scsi

after this i do not even get the option to 'press any key to boot from cd' it just gives me the error message .........error loading operating system" on the black screen

cheers

Is this with the new hdd in?

That 'press any key to boot from cd' is what you want and it will disappear after a few seconds. You need to do as it says quickly. Next it should enter set up and you should see a load of stuff at the bottom being loaded. It then asks what you want to do and you want to instal XP (enter i think) It will then look for a HDD and ask you to set up a partition and format. At this stage we want to know what size it gives you. It ought to be 360000mb or there abouts.

It will then offer to format. you want NTFS (not the quick one). This should take about 20-30 minutes and you will see a yellow line.

That done, XP will start to copy files and that takes a while too. It then restarts and starts the xp installation.

How big is XP telling you your HDD is and where are you getting to

yes its with the new hard drive in and the xp discs work in both drives when i browse them

yes the very first time i tried to format "yesterday" ,,it did all that and it did just as you discribed ,,, and it told me all the info you mention above 360000mb there abouts.

it started loading but took about 40 mins to get off 0 % then took 5 min to load from 0% to 100% after the loading in 100% on the yellow bar

it stopped and gave me the massage

error cannot install xp on the drive your xp disc may be damaged or you may have to set your scsi setting up and then the pc restarted

I since then i have tried ti do it about 10 times but i do not even get the

'press any key to boot from cd' any more iit just gives me the the error message

"error loading operating system"

I have tried to load xp on both cd and dvd drive with both xp os discs that i have [I know for sure both discs work ok ]and all i now get is the black start up screen with that error message at the bottom

cheers

For some reason your BIOS is still trying to boot from HDD. That is why you are getting that error message I think. It is trying to find your op system and you know it is not there. If it went to cd that would boot.

As for the yellow line, are you sure that is not it formatting.

Try this. Leave your old drive in as master. put the new one in as slave.boot!!!

hi guys ....chrispystix i had a look at the set to boot thx

ok i started from fresh and went throught the proceedure again and that showed my floppy had reset its self to first boot "dont know how" so i set it cd first boot and dvd second then hdd third boot

also on the new hard drive it gave two setttings for master .... 32bg setting and 16 cylinder setting so i changed it to 32 gb setting dont know if that was the right thing to do but any way at the moment it is loading windows ..with a bit of luck it may work

cheers

Good luck!! It looks like you have limited your hdd to 32gb. This is the trouble with old boards. I it is the BIOS you may be able to flash it. If it is the south bridge that wont recognise it you may have a problem. the max might be 137gb.

Lets see how you go
