Installing The Orange Box!!!

Preordered from an online shop a little while back - estimated delivery date 23rd - not too impressed to be honest. Cost £24.98, not checked what I could have got it for in shops now

I have asked this is another thread but this looks a good place to ask. If I buy the orange box from a store or online retailer . Can this be registered to my steam account so that steam loads the game and looks after the game?

If it does I guess i would have to enter the code from the box and then download the game over steam?

Cheers

Mike

I've answered it in the other thread, but I'll add:

You can install it to your Steam account you are logged in to I believe, so you wont have to download anything bar a couple of updates.

Yes when you install it off DVD it actually installs Steam first (asking for existing account details) and then once you register the game using the code you are prompted to load game data off the DVD before it does all the updates via steam.

Is it possible to install the game without entering the CD key each time? I ask because im giving my friend HL2 and Epp1, I need to install them however as we have a low bandwith limit.... And as it will be on a different steam account it will no doubt moan!

If you're gifting HL2 and HD2:Ep1, best bet would be to copy the cache files for the games over to his PC, then he log on with his account after you have gifted the games to him. That way no need to download much else.

Another qick question. Ive been offered orange box second hand. The guy says hese uninstalled it off his steam account. I dont know him but he sounds honest. Would the cd keyt work on my account if it has definately been installed off his account?

Cheers

You can't just uninstall steam games and give them to someone else.. Normally you have to buy the account (which is against the steam tos) or take a photo of the original and contact support to switch it (I think)

Nothing new there. In fact I've seen quite a few games patched BEFORE release day.

Also they could be 'doing a bioshock' and trying to combat piracy by leaving an important bit of code out i.e. forcing you to update the game before playing.

Given the choice between having a patch available on release day, or a game which has huge unpatched flaws lying unfixed for months I know which I'd prefer. First thing I do after installing any game (well, during install usually!) is check for any available updates anyway.

There's a time delay between when the game goes Gold and release day. The developers still work on ironing out any bugs though, so they tend to put a patch up on release day.

Cheers for that. Have decided to pay a little more and buy from a store. So muh less hassle

So does that mean that if, one day, I decide I want to sell my copy of Orange Box (which I have every right to) I cannot do this? Surely thats against the law right? Once I have bought something I am lumbered with it for ever?

Pretty much, but I don't think you have any right to sell it. It's in their terms, which you agreed to when you bought a steam game. Would be nice if they implemented a system to sell or give games, but if you look at it from their point of view, where's the benefit? All they would be doing is losing out on the revenue that person would have spent buying it through steam. :)

Yeah true, but imagine if the same applied to everything you bought, you'd be living in the same 2 bedroom house all ya life, still have a crappy 21" CRT TV, an old Ford Escort... simply cos you couldnt sell them to get anything new... or you would have several of everything!

I think thats wrong personally, and they should make it more obvious that you cannot sell it!

I suppose the difference is that cars, TVs etc tend to depreciate somewhat more - or rather the car company continue to sell new cars at more or less the original price, while the used car continues to depreciate. A downloaded game has the same value new or used at any given point in time, whereas the used car market is an entirely different one to the new car market.

I've rearranged this post 3 times and it still doesn't quite make sense :p well maybe it does

:) it does make sense, but I suppose we adrifting from the point really, the fact that if I have finished a game, what good is it to me... If Im not going to play it again I should be able to get some cash for it. Its not fair, and it would put me off buying it if I knew.

Got to say I agree big time with Keogh. We have always been able to sell on games after we complete them (just like selling DVD's after we have watched them a couple of times). We are the honest people who support the games industry by buying the originals in the first place, not like the leaches who use peer to peer to rip off the hard working software houses. But ultimately its ourslves who get shafted if we cant ligitimately sell on a game to try finance buying the next title.

I will never pirate a game as I appreciate we need PC games to survive vs the ever growing lucrative console market. But I do struggle financially and to sell on a game after I no longer want it does help me to finance my next new game. If the future is steam then I dont think it will be just me who will struggle to keep buying new pc games.
