My Vista Ultimate 64bit came today.

Im a noob when it comes to PC's

I want to installl it but is it a case of just putting the cd in and then following the simple steps?

I can wait until Tomorrow and get my dad to do it, but I wanted to do it today..

so...

Yes it is, pop the cd in turn on the PC and follow the steps, you cant go wrong. Once its installed you can then install any driver cd's you have eg gfx card etc

You need to set your PC to boot from disk first, so that the install process will start. Once that's done, it's quite easy (easier than installing XP anyway.)

It will install over XP if you reformat your install partition. Otherwise I believe it compresses XP and sticks it into a folder called Windows.old or something. Best just to install over.

Make sure you've backed everything up though.

Do I have to un-install xp first?

Ah sorry I didnt realise you already had computer up and running, though it was a fresh build, nvm, in that case then yeah as reflu says hit del as your computer starts to get into your BIOS, there should be an option to change your boot priority, make sure its CD/DVD before HDD, though it prob is anyway tbh. No you dont have to uninstall XP vista will just write over the top of it, but you will lose all your personal data and programs on the HDD, so if you need any files back them up, if you dont want to lose any programs etc you could buy a new HDD and install the new one as your main drive and install vista on that then just use your old drive as a secondary drive to access the files you have on it

Ok, thanks

When I put the cd and boot from cd.. what steps are there.. cos I think im going to get lost and do something wrong..

Because I you dont put the cd in.. and then click install, and then 30 mins later its done...!?

myself i would go for an xp32/vista64 duel boot as i am doing exactly that now :P. your hdd needs to be partitioned to do this and its better to put vista on last as you break your loader doing it the other way around

It is pretty simple. Once you have done the boot from cd, Basically select the partition, so something like C Drive, and if a previous windows version is installed it will put all that data on the root of the drive in a folder called Windows.old . So in that folder is basically a backup of everything. Unless you want a nice clean install. then you just reformat the drive.

Once you get past that little bit, from what i can remember, it does its thing and installs vista which can take a while though usually (30-60 mins). When that is done it will guide you through setting up user names, wallpaper, date & time etc. Then once you have done that, your pretty much ready to go. I would restart the pc after the installation is all finished and your actually on your new windows vista desktop and start installing drivers, and changing settings, and software. You can then also move your documents/files from the windows.old folder. Though i wouldnt move over programs and try to run them as they most likely wont work. Instead just your old my documents folder, pictures, music, etc.

I would recommend though first getting a usb stick or a cd and downloading all the drivers/software you will need for vista. So thats graphics drivers, any other system drivers and what might be important, things like modem drivers for your internet connection if you dont have a router.

ok, Thanks

so basically I boot my computer from CD.. Then go into Bios. Select a partition , and I take it I delete that partition..

and then It should install Vista

No, you need to go into BIOS and tell the PC to boot from CD, otherwise it will boot from your hard disk as usual.

Then the Vista install should start.

That's where the partition/install manager is.

Ok...

There aint much on my pc as I reformated the other day (I didnt reformat it, dad did).. But Do I want to Reformat? Or just Install Vista? Im basically saying how to Reformat and then install Vista

sorry for being a noob

You want to reformat the whole thing then. It's very easy, just give it a shot.

EDIT: The guide posted above is very good.

I put the CD in

Press Esc to Boot Menu

Then a list comes up

and my keyboard wont let me move down to select 'vista cd'

I ave tried 2 different Keyboards..

And I set CD to boot first in the bios

any suggestions?

Once you have set the PC to boot from the CD first, pop the CD in and turn the computer on, then don't press anything, it will load the CD and the install process automatically...then just follow the info on screen.

The guide above gets a thumbs up from me too.
