I've just built a new system with a 60GB OCZ Vertex SE and a 1TB hard drive I'm planning on stalling win 7 on the SSD but have read about secure erasing SSD's and updating the firmware. The problem I have is that most people say this should be done on a spare sata port but I don't have access to another computer. Would it be possible to install windows on the 1TB drive, attatch the SSD and secure erase and update then install the OS on the SSD.

Any help gratefully received

Hey you wont need to secure erase the SSD as it has never been installed on if brand new, just select the drive and install Windows onto it. If you want to update the SSD in the future you can follow my thread that takes you through step by step how to boot a live CD using parted magic(Linux OS) this can update your drive as well as secure erase for your next re-install.

Bearing all this in mind, for these tools to work, you MUST be in AHCI mode. Or it will not work.

Hope this clears things up, as for being on the latest firmware, if you are on 1.24-1.28 atm (1.28 being the latest) there is no need to update as it brings no further changes.

Cheers.

hey fella,

Just a case of turning on entering bios. setting AHCI mode on. Then restarting and installing the W7. It will ask you to do a quick format of the SSD and its real easy. I have the 50 gig edition. Absolutely chuffed with it mate.
