Insurance claim on old gaming rig .. What will they give me?

If replaced and the old rig is the property of the insurance company, does that include all the data on the disk too ?

Be interested to see how this turns out, many years ago I made a claim on my household insurance due to a PC which I killed when I dropped in down the stairs.(butterfingers) The Insurance company had a new machine built for me which was better than the one that died.
But nowadays I find Insurance companies (and I know what I'm talking about having worked in Insurance for 30 years) are not so nice or helpful and forthcoming with the money.

The problem with new for old with custom built systems is it is about proving what it is worth which insurance companies will do whatever they can to get out of giving you it's value at the time you purchased it also a lot of them have a small print claiming about custom electrical goods you wont get the value after 3-5 years.

One of my family member had the same thing happen and they showed all the purchase invoices for every part to show how much it was worth at the time it costs about £800 and was about the same spec as the original posters the insurance company came back with offer of vouchers for currys/pcworld worth £500.

while i like C world, giving you a voucher for that shop is abit restrictive isnt it?

mean they got a nice while intel all in one computer by asus i think, been £300 for months which i nearly had. but i found better elsewhere lol, so i wouldnt have been happy if this was me, back whenever or present.. insurance companies have always been a joke.

Ok so for those that are interested. The computer is being collected by courier tomorrow to be taken to my insures computer company.

The guy on the phone explained a little more as to what will happen.

They will strip it down and inspect components to see if any are salvageable. If they are they will reuse them proving there are no comparability issues.

They will also replace like for like. So for example. I have 2 GPU's in my old rig albeit old ones. If one of those has been damaged beyond repair they will replace with a like for like. Now in this case they will most likely struggle to get new 4850's. If this is the case they will look to upgrade them. This goes for all components that fitted and are damaged.

If the cost of repair does not exceed my excess they will give me the option to have the damage unit back to repair myself at the cost of carriage.

With regards to the HDD. I have the option to have it returned to me when they have repaired/replaced the PC at the cost of carriage.

So for now my fingers are crossed.

As for increased premiums, I suppose this is inevitable BUT in the 12 years I have had insurance cover not once have I made a claim so hopefully this goes in my favour.

Interested to see how this turns out. Surprised they are willing to go through stripping down and testing components and still give you the option not to proceed with the claim. That's a lot of work and cost on their side.

It won't. Unless you've got protected no claims discount your premiums will increase. In fact they can still go up even with protected discount, just not by as much.

Like for like performance and spec wise you're looking at a pair of R7 240's - they're about on par with 4850's. You'd be better with a single card though, something like a 750ti would absolutely spank the Crossfire setup!

It's the processor that I think they'll have the most problems speccing up. The closest modern equivalent is something like an Athlon x4 860k and even that is a fair chunk faster!

Used to work for a large police force and I was surprised at just how far back they could get parts when all the machine were covered by a third party external company. You could fill in what was wrong blown motherboard etc and the old machine would be returned with a new MB or reconditioned that was guaranteed for a period.

I suspect you could get back a similar machine to the one going out the door. Getting back a working PC similar spec is a result with a limited guarantee in my book. -voluntary excess costs.

Lol at this. U really did an insurance claim for a 7 year old pc?

They will offer you approx £200 or a bottom spec pc.

But they will also rack ur insurance up by £50 a year and you now have no no claims and 1 clam on ur history.

Aye pretty much what I thought. I've my pc insured for 3k so I'd get back at least £1k if I claimed for it. A core 2 duo wouldn't be worth claiming on and losing your no claims for IMO

How's it going guys, sorry for the silence been waiting on insurance decision before posting again.

So I have had my offer today and I must say very pleased with the outcome. They have offered me.

Asus Maximus VII Hero
I5 4460 3.2ghz
4gb Kingston Fury x ddr3
X2 Asus GTX950 strix 2gb GDDR5 in SLi
800w modular PSU (didn't get the brand)
Kingston 120gb SSD with Windows 10
500gb SATA 3 HDD
New ATX gaming case

And they also threw in a new cougar gaming mouse and keyboard. So all in all I'm very pleased with the outcome.

Santander new for old is definitely worth my premiums. I've priced all that up on ocuk and it comes in a little under £1000 so the £150 excess was worth it. They also did data transfer from my old HDD for an additional £35.

I'll probably get another 4gb ram on order for when it arrives next week.

What are people's thoughts on the GPU's will they do for a bit until I can afford upgrade?

Lucky git Gotta say, I don't have insurance for house hold and that, but I had my doubts like the rest.

Amazing how that worked out a near 1k replacement for a build that probably didn't cost half that back in the day..

Unless you need more gpu power you might as well stick that sli out given that you got offered it.

Thanks FixupSellon, I'll be honest I was bricking it a bit after processing the claim and then seeing all the negative comments about £150 this and not worth the excess but worked out great really.

Fixup you really should star out the whole of any profanity and not just part of it. As per the rules.

Edit Grant do you mind telling us roughly how much the insurance policy cost you ? im in fact very interested in pc insurance

EDIT : Sorry for being a tool i for some reason am assuming here that the insurance was specifically for the pc and not contents insurance?
