Insurance, ouch!

Dunno what you're complaining about - i'm 27 with 3Y experience, 2NCB and a 25 year old named driver, and i'm still paying over £600. :p

I had a little 50cc trail bike when I was 17 :p

Besides, how many 17yo need a car (as opposed to wanting one).

Insurance is all about risk and that comes from statistics.

Big sweeping generalisation here..

Statistically speaking:

A 17 year old will have more accidents.
A 17 year old is likely to drive a small engine.
People who recently passed their test have more accidents.
A male is more likely to have accidents.
The more miles you do increase the chance of an accident.

So you got to think in those terms, insurance is not strictly directly proportional to the value of the car or engine size. It is also a risk game for them to insure you.

That is of course the post code, area you live in with its crime rate also affects it, as well as where you park it. It's not just the possibility of an accident, also the possibility of you making a claim - theft, fire, criminal damage etc.

So do something a little different, get something a teenager stay away from, think outside the box.

p.s. £600 is cheap if you have no named drivers on it.

Alright, still on the subject of insurance, just about...

Say I had £2500 for the car + insurance. Looking at a 1.6 as a good balance between performance and running costs.

Looks and prestige not important. Want to avoid "boy racer" cars for insurance.

Running and servicing costs very important.

What should I be looking at?

£750 is my new best quote for my MX5 as an unemployed 20 year old student with an accident, 2NCB, and a TS10 to my name. :D

Wait, parking on the street lowers your premium vs parking in drive/garage?

I thought it was due to the fact that most modern cars get stolen by the thief breaking into the house and taking the keys, if you're parked on the street they don't know which house it belongs to.

ha £600? ha..hahaha....hahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.....pay up and enjoy.

I paid £1230 for my first car in 2009 :(

Mk1 Ford focus 1.6 Zetec - reasonable spec, nice car to be in, handles nicely, cheap to run, easy to fix, cheap to tax/insure, little boy racer appeal...

Yep I passed my test when I was 29 and my first car was a Focus 1.6. My quotes were around £1200 which I thought was pretty good so to be getting around £600 quotes at just 2 years older you're doing well.

I'm 28 and mine is still about £750.

I have fully comp, legal, protected no claims though so I guess it's alright.

My dad's is like... £230 or something silly, guess that's something to look forward to about being 60 lol.

I pay £700 for my Cupra 21, 1NCB, 3 named drivers. Not too bad for my age. £600 is really good mate, especially without adding any named drivers.

Buy an old Suzuki Vitara for about 800 quid, Make sure it has no rott.
Buy 5 quids worth of plaggy drain pipe & Modify (;)) a Snorkel onto the Vit.
Buy some 2nd hand wheels & tyres off a Grand Master Vit & stick them on.
Ring Adrian Flux & get a quote for a Modified Off road vehicle, BINGO. :D
