Insurance, ouch!

OP: £600 a year isn't half bad. As with most others on this thread, I paid through the nose to insure my first car - over £1500 on a 1.1 Fiesta back in 2001. Most youngsters (especially lads) passing their test these days are paying in the £2000-£3000 range.

I pay only twenty quid short £600 to insure my car - a 1.4 Civic at 27 years old with 9 years NCB, no points/accidents etc, so £600 with zero experience isn't to be sniffed at.

Even my dad's insurance, which used to be comically low (around £150 or so, given 40 years of claim free driving), is now in the region of £300+

OK, thanks for all the replies :)

Think I'll start looking around for petrol Mk1 Focus cars in my area, as they seem to be the OcUK go to choice for what I'm looking to spend.

Put myself right off a diesel after reading about diesel-specific problems like clogged DPF filters. Since I'm not going to be doing too many miles anyhow, a petrol should be better for me I think.

Is the £600 quote paying monthly or a one off payment? Not sure if it still happens but if you pay monthly for your insurance isn't it more?
I dont mean paying £600 per month :)

In my experience, most insurers are interested in the time you've been driving primarily, then your age, then your NCD.

I'd say £600 for a new driver is bloody good.

You should count yourself lucky!

I have just started driving, passed my test at 17, just turned 18.

I paid £1000 for a 2003 Fiat Punto 1.2 with 55000 miles on the clock.

However, my insurance is over £4500!!!!!!

Only because you didn't take my advice and do your quote with admiral, which were coming out around £2.5K.

And then continue to phone them and hounder them with rubbish information you can get it cheaper elsewhere but want to use Admiral because of recommendations.

Done that with mine and managed to get another £160 knocked off :)

I don't see the problem?

Insurance is meant to be based on driving EXPERIENCE not age, so it makes sense to be to be honest.

With insurance prices supposedly gone up around 50%, it's no wonder you're paying that much, we're all taking a hit :)

I had a quick look last night and to ensure myself on a 1litre corsa would be something like 2500 up front or 3000 with installments. I'm on an apprenticeship and that just isn't gonna be possible any time soon, which sucks.

Swiftcover, Fully Comp, Max Excess (£1k iirc) seems to be cheapest for bangernomics for me at the moment.

I'd never claim on a low value car so I see no problem with the crazy excess?

Op why don't you buy a motorbike instead? You said you would use public transport instead of pay the insurance so it doesn't sound like you're transporting heavy goods, why not get a motorbike?

i was quoted £1000 for a motorbike with 110Bhp. that was a brand new licence.
