Hi guys,

Passed my test wednesday and was looking forward to getting my insurance today. So ran a few quotes through the main companies, directline, tesco's and endsliegh etc and they're all coming back at 2k + which means spending 50% of my wages a month on insurance alone. Which i cant really do.

Now i understand that its illegal for my mum to be the first on the insurance even and me be a named driver. But what if; My mum was the owner of the car, she lives at the same address and puts miles into the car every so often. And then im a named driver and use it for work and college. Would that 'be' illegal?!?!

Also can no claims bonus be used on only one car or two?!

Jack

P.S: anyone have any ideas?

What car you running it on and have you tried adding your mum/sister/gran as a named driver as they should help bring the quote down.

Also try phoning and bartering with them for a price, I found this worked best, after phoning about 20 or so varying insurers got a quote I was more than happy with.

On the subject of insuring in your mums name unless she is the main driver you will be driving illegally and breaking terms of your insurance, you shouldnt do it and you will be thankful in a few years when you got some NCB so you can get something a bit quicker for a much reduced cost :D NCB is what you want. your hit now will benefit you in the future.

There is nothing wrong with your mum owning and insuring the car with you as a named driver. However, if you do not disclose that you are the main user and are subsequently found out then the insurance company can void the policy from inception effectively leaving you uninsured.

An alternative is for your mum to insure it with you as the main user. This can work out cheaper although you will not build up your own no claims bonus.

No claims bonus can only be used on one car, although some companies provide a second car discount.

The insurance company must know who is the 'main' driver. If you use it most of the time like you suggest, then you are the main driver. You can be the main driver without being the policy holder, but your insurance company must be aware of this, otherwise it's insurance fronting.

And NCB can only be used on one car.

If you are the main driver, then what you are suggesting is called fronting, and is not legal.

The companies you have listed are not good for young drivers - fact!

Check the sticky at the top of this section, and start calling/doing online quotes!

FOR ME, the Admiral Group (Admiral, Bell, Diamond, Elephant) come out cheapest - and the cost is brought down further by adding my mum as a 2nd driver to the policy.

I did what you are suggesting when I started driving, and it was the single worst decision I have made in my driving career - I really, really, really wish I'd got my own policy when I first started, as it'd be much cheaper for me now than it currently is!

It's a 1.4 tipo and compared to a 950cc cinquecentotototototo its like 500 pound more expensive... It's just so gutting having spent like 500 pound on passing then no being able to drive.

That doesn't sound right at all. No wonder loads of people drive without insurance when all you get for that is a £100 fine.

My mate's little bro was paying about £1300 on a ratty old clio 1.4.

yeah i just did an insurance quote on a 1.2 clio with tesco TPFT and its just under 2 grannnnnndddddddd and thats why my mum on it aswell!! whats wrong with meee lolol

Ouch at those qoutes .. you sure you havnt been banned at the age of 15 for driving down a motorway the wrong way in a stolen car?
