Insurance

ATM we have no house insurance of any kind....

That's just slightly scary but it's your call. From what I've seen there's not much benefit in specific camera insurance for amateurs compared to the cover that's available through a normal home contents policy. In fact the last quote I got for specific camera cover was more than I pay for contents including the camera.

In the past 10 or so years if we had insurance it would have cost more than what we'd of saved anyway =)

I was recommended Photoguard by someone on a different forum, and I went with them. Thankfully I've not had to use them yet so I cant comment on that side of them.
-How.

I bet you haven't saved the resulting spare cash 'just in case' though.....? :D :p

But yes, as rpstewart said - unless you've got really expensive gear, upwards of £2k, and perhaps even £2k per item, it may well be cheaper to just get house insurance anyhow.

I doubt most contents insurance cost a lot more than £15 per month (unless you have loads of uber ££££ stuff). The wife can't remember exactly, but ours is about £120 ish per year, and that's to cover upto iirc £20k items and covers all my gear out and about including accidental damage for upto £2k per item. I'm unclear whether the insurance company sees my whole setup as one item or piece by piece. Not a problem for me atm though, as all my gear is worth ~£1.5k tops to replace.

Be careful though, some camera eqpt. insurance companies have been known to screw about concerning claims.

Photoguard for me too. They are pretty quick with updating my policy when I add an item or remove one. I think I pay about £250 now (haven't checked since I last paied), for around £8K (have not checked this recently either). They have the option of pay by the month if you want, but this costs more overall.

Oh and I am on professional cover, which has a public liability element, and equipment hire while your equipment is being replaced is standerd on all policies I think.

Yeah I'm with photoguard as well. The choice was due to a lack of options really. I have not been able to find any presidence for claims on them either good or bad - could imply that no-one has had bad experience...

Well the forum I got the recommendation from did have one person that said he made a claim and they were quick and very good. I still cant remember which forum it was though.....

Photoguard for me too. I've got worldwide cover which wasnt actually that much extra to europe 30days etc. Handy if you travel a lot!

just had a look on that site. seems reasonable, I set the value as 1000 (which would give me an extra 500 for more lenses than I have at the moment) and it came to £35 a year, UK cover only

Does this seem a little too reasonable? maybe I missed an option somewhere
