INTEL 3820 X79 BASED CPU NOW IN STOCK!!

There's rumours of a delay. Let's be honest intel hardly need to rush shipping it when they must have plenty of stock of sandy bridge chips and no competition to deal with.

Nothing worth worrying about I'm sure someone will come along and calculate it but probably less than £50 a year.

It is hard to say, but based on a couple of hours a night and one gaming session a weekend, then less than £50 sounds about right, though it isn't really worth thinking about if you are going to stick a monster GPU in there..

I need not apply when it comes to a pc that is electricity efficient

<hugs his GTX480 :)!! >

lol I am going to have tobe the 1st to buy and post up overclocks ?

amazed no-ones raved or winged about this chip after purchasing on here yet

I'm still very close but keep reading about the IB delays then being on track hmmm. Go on order one and persuade me;)

At that price its looking increasingly more likely I will get one. I think thats a proper good price when you consider how fast one is at 4.5GHZ and which seems to be attainable on every review so far.

I have just kind of been waiting, what with all the Kepler and IB rumours about delays then they are back on for March-ish time...I don't want to splash out a large amount of money and a few weeks down the line be like ahhh why didn't I just delay.

It doesn't really matter does it - at that price you will have a cpu comparable or better in some tests than a SB quad, with the advantage of x79 upgrade path and quad memory at a great price etc etc

I am seriously thinking about this route too. I mean the X79 platform has plenty of room for memory upgrades and GPU upgrades for a good number of years. With Ivy Bridge-E you will also have new CPU upgrades for at least a couple more years.

Apart from the small incremental cost over a Z68 platform what are the drawbacks of this route? Is there anything that X79 does not have that will be on the new Ivy Bridge Mobos just round the corner?

the only disadvantages - Isee anyway are not chipset related but future CPU related:

(1) If the 1155 Ivys (out in a few months) are immense >5.0 gig overclockers and are quitte a bit faster clock to clock as well ... and I think the Ivy-Es arenn't out till 2013 ....

(2) If there is no affordable Ivy-E released ...

I was leaning towards a 3820 + 2011 - but I'm thinking now that more immediate future proof is a Gen3 Z68 chipset

But in a few years time, when the new GPUs max out x16 lanes isnt X79 going to be the chipset to have rather than Z68. Most people upgrade their GPUs a lot more than a CPU. So what if IB is 10-20% faster than SB-E. Will you notice the difference and at least with X79 you always have the option of going for more than 4 cores.

By the time 16 lanes are saturated to the point it has a significant effect, both sockets will be obsolete.

My Q6600 socket 775 has been obsolete for years yet it still games well with the my new 570 GPU. If I could upgrade the CPU I would but now I need a new mobo as I do a bit of video work and would like something quicker and something that can go SLI.

Are you saying that 2 X 16 slots will still be plenty for another 5 or 6 years?

I got a 3820, Gigabyte UD5 and 16GB 1866 Bllistix on Saturday.

The 3820 runs relatively cool and I havent seen higher than 68C @ 4.00GHZ. I'm using an old and poorly ventilated Lian-li case and an Arctic Cooling heatsink; PWM means CPU fans is at about 1000RPM and system fans are below 500RPM at full load.

I'm wondering if my Antec Quattro is up to the task. If I try any higher than 4.2Ghz the system just switches itself on and off again continously. Perfectly stable at 4.00Ghz with 4.20Turbo (Speedstep working properly too).

Meh....sticking with my 990x....it looks no faster than 2600k and 2700k was no better than the 2600k........and both of those were only microscopically quicker than my 990x at 5GHz.........SB chips that do beat my 990x were at 5ghz or 5.2ghz. I'll be waiting for a more worthwhile upgrade.....ie....one that will actually be an UPGRADE! ;)

2500k it's more than enough for gaming and day to day computing etc. Don't understand why people keep saying to wait for the Ivybridge. Total waste of money.

It is for now, but it won't be forever, IB will obviously out last the 2500k, so people that want to wait might as well. Dont you agree?

I don't agree.

The performance increase from Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge doesn't seem to be huge.

By the time you've reached the point where an i5-2500K starts to struggle the Ivy Bridge equivalent will be pretty much there as well.
