Intel 5960X. Best CPU ever made.

The thing with the likes of the 5960X, Core 2 Quads, the Xeons I mentioned, etc. they've not just outlived their generation but stayed relevant over a large timespan, some of the other CPUs were great within their generation/era for various reasons whether performance, value for money or overclockability, or a combination of, etc. but quickly became obsolete once their generation moved on.

A lot of the mini PCs, Windows tablets, etc. have only just started to pull away from the better Core 2 Quad cores for performance interestingly (the outgoing J4125 for instance was broadly comparable to the Q9550).

Intel kept releasing the same chip with minimal performance uplift for the best part of a decade, so of course chips will stay relevant.

The best of the DDR4 generation… The 5820K makes a better argument than the 5960X as even when first released the 5960X was very overpriced. Zen is the stand out architecture of this generation by some way.

I love how stagnation becomes stayed relevant

Has a 5960X (swapped out a 5820K) but for me it would be the 'D0' stepping i7 920.

An easy 50% overlock on the rated speed under water for a very quick CPU at the time when AMD were floundering

I ran my i7 920 and 4.0 stable from 2008 to earlier this year. Admittedly it's been obsolete for a while now but what a champ! I actually ran it at 4.2 for a long while too.

My feelings on this topic can be best sumed up with a picture. I am at the point of the black arrow.

Intel 486 DX2 66 MHz, my second CPU from a 386 based PC, and also my first home built PC with Vesa Local Bus Tseng Labs graphic card or something and massive 8MB for time ram, yes 8MB not GB. DOS 5 rocked LOL

I had the same processor!! It was good. I think I only had 4MB ram. 800mb HDD too.

Great cpu. I built my i7 920 system in early 2009 and posting on it now. Had it running around 4ghz for a while but now back to stock and it's still ok for general work.

Yeah I loved that thing. It used my first SSD too. 1st gen Intel 640.

Nice I still remember how much of a difference SSDs made in the early days.

Mine has 12GB RAM and I still find it kind of funny there are systems being sold with less even now. Value for money was great back in 2008/9.

Definitely. Same, 3x 4GB triple channel RAM (why didn't that take off). The jump from HDD to SSD was massive! Even just 400/500 mbs read. Consoles have only just made the same jump.

I got 6 years out of my i5-6600 and to be honest it would still do everything I want now apart from newer first person shooters with over 20 players

it ran bf V fine until they nakered performance on a patch

Had a Q6600 for years - wonderful chip of it's day

Also had a 5960X under water for a good while - again wonderful chip for its time and clocked like a champ

Clearly not a fair comparison re GOAT as the technology moves on but still great chips

I still have a working x58 with xeon in it at 4.2ghz at work doing office duties and also a 5960x with 2080ti in my workshop still rocking hard
