Looking at building a new PC very soon mainly for upcoming games Far Cry 5 and the new Metro game which I will play on PC (Shooters on console uuugghhh)

I can build a 8400 / 8700K rig now or hold fire for 2700x and use exisiting (mid end basic) AM4 mobo.

Which of these chips would be best for gaming and overall productivity, value etc?

Plz discuss.

8700k is the best gaming chip.only reason or ryzen to pick the new ryzen 2 chip is for multitasking and media on a budget.8400 would be for a gamer on a budget wanting best performance per pound at a decent standard.

You can quote me on this and remind me to eat my hat if it changes.
The 8400 will beat the 2700x in 90% games

Even patched my 8700k will beat any ryzen in games lol.

Bold statements in a changing environment.
Still with intels 10nm. just around the corner you could well be right. :D

I’m in a similar position, building a new pc for gaming. Going to be on a 49inch 4K tv, got a evga 1080ti ftw3 now just need to decide on the cpu. Was waiting on the new Ryzen to decide.

If I do go 8700k need recommendations on the motherboard, over the years been mainly using Asus apart from on 2 occasions.

Wait until the Ryzen 2000 series is released, and FarCry5 is an AMD Gaming Evolved title - it even uses FP16 for some effects.

What AM4 motherboard do you have??

8700k will be infront of 99.9 percent of games.ryzen 2 main benefit is they improved the multithreaded side.the single is just 3 percent up.so the intel i5s beat them never mind i7 8700k.the only benchies you will see games in front will be from a amd bias site or side.if theey priced well will still be popular.

Maximus hero x has been solid for me. Although a bit pricey. Depends on how far you want to push CPU/memory

While it would be nice to get 5ghz out of it I’m not an extreme overclocker, want it stable and not constantly blue screening or be too hot. I’ll be using the fractal design Celsius s24 in the meshify c case, from what I’ve read tall memory can clash so looking at low profile memory.

Should be fine with any memory on an AIO mate.
All boards are capable of 5ghz going from de8aurer's video. The differences come down to VRM temps. The 5ghz stable is down to the CPU. The most popular boards such as the maximus x hero are more likely to have guides showing what settings to use etc so that may be of some help.
The AORUS Gaming 7 from gigabyte is also a very capable board.
