Intel Buy McAfee

Bad move by Intel there, I can only see them losing money on this.
McAfee is CRAP.

I am pretty sure they've spent an awful lot of time and money looking in to it and wouldn't have made the move if they didn't have something planned that is going to make them some money!

saw this on the register its quite interesting, at first glance its odd why they would want to buy a security firm, however as its been pointed out with more and more devices connecting to the internet the security industry is only really going to get bigger.

McAfee isn't terrible, just slow, and prone to more false positives then it pobably should be. When you're a big company, you're going to want that over unreliable, unsupported free stuff.

Glad i sold my Intel stock. This will make internal laptop builds more interesting i guess - cant complain that its hard to get McAfee to implement their bespoke changes now :)

In some form or another I think it's inevitable.

I'm not sure what AV features they could possibly implement in a CPU though, it would just be messy surely?

Ultimately all they could do is provide some kind of AV friendly instruction set and im not too sure how that could possibly help speed up reading data from the HDD/RAM and comparing it for matches in a signature database. The whole process is expensive and coupled with needing to be OS independent I can't see it ever being feasible. Best left to the OS/software. The more generic security boundaries/features already in CPUs seem about as high level as it should go really imo.

I think it'll manifest itself in security features like DEP etc. Not replacing AV but making the software more integrated from the hardware up.

I cant see Intel putting it on chips, unless it's for low level scanning at boot time, if they did, the likes of Norton, NOD, et al would not be happy, I can't see everyone wanting to be forced to use McAfee. - But I guess we will find out there plans all in good time

Through buying McAfee, a leading security technology firm, Intel intends to build security features into its microprocessors which go into products such as laptops and phones.

Some people need to read the article before posting :p
