Intel buying Havok

Havok is pretty new and has probably only been around for 5 years tops (I think Max Payne 2 was the first game I noticed it being pimped in).

It's been around a little longer than that. It was started up by computer graphics researchers from Trinity College Dublin, and they got a lot of interest from big names early on. As well as games, they also do physics plug-ins for 3d rendering packages such as 3D Studio.

A couple of them used to teach us programming while they were finishing their postgrades.

VERY talanted people. No doubt they're doing well for themselves these days.

no he didn't. I was just thinking that it seems that its only the Unreal engine that seems to get a lot of development. Must be cheaper or easier/more flexible than the offerings from the "big" devs?

seems like a reasonable theory. it IS a real shame that valves engine isnt being used. they have the engine and the platform to distribute games on a massive scale, yet presumable their greed has pretty much killed that idea dead.

Doom and Prey are the same engine. Both are id Tech 4 and the answer I think is 10ish putting it ahead of the HL 2 engine. But that needs double checking.
