but yes, an 8400 / Ryzen 2600/1600 is better for most things.

That would be the i5-7640X, which sold even less than the i7-7740X. Same architecture, just with a higher power limit and the integrated graphics disabled.

Guessing I've sat through more architecture lectures than you then. I can comprend and understand the concepts that make them tick. Feel free to have an enlightening discussion on ALUs and branch prediction strategies with Humbug while I do something more fun! That's if he can remove the blinkers, stop massively generalising based on some benchmark graphs and randomly picking figures that make Ryzen look better.
