Intel Core i5-2500K temp problem

Hi, I am having some temp issues with my Intel Core i5-2500K, the idle temp is around 40oC and under full load fit reaches 90+ very quickly. One of the cores actually hit 97oC . Am using coretemp and speedfan to measure the temps.

I tried reseating the heatsink and applied new thermal paste but it made no difference. I also tried my Thermaltake big typhoon but the temps are still hitting 90 degress.

BTW the CPU is running at standard clocks, and all drivers and bios are up to date.

System info:
Asus p8p67 LE
G.Skill RipJaw 4GB
XFX 6850 gfx

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

that just sounds wrong...

- you reseated the heatsink
- you replaced the thermal paste
- you are running at stock

is there a possibility the chip/sensor is damaged?

Is there a way to check?

what rpm is your cpu fan running at? also does it speed up under load?

CPU fan is running at 1337 rpm. This is the maximum, I turned off the speed control in the bios and set it to run at maximum rpm.

Very very tentatively and briefly prod the heatsink. If you spend the next 10 minutes with your finger under cold water, then the sensor is working. :p I can't imagine the CPU getting that hot unless either something in it is royally broken or you left the plastic cover on something! So I'd suggest physically checking the temperature of the heat sink near the CPU.

My 2500k is overclocked to 4.4Ghz and that maxes out under full load in the mid 70s on a Corsair A50, which is hardly the world's best cooler. My idle temps are high 30s to low 40s depending on ambient temperature.

which cooler is that? the after market one or oem one?

also what voltage is going to the 25k on idle and load?

Check if there's newest BIOS revision for your mobo, it always helps.
If everything is seated properly (CPU & heatsink), so maybe it's time to consider some lapping ? It's not a big discover that Intel's IHSes are not too straight :)

I'll join and ask a question...
Just did a bench/test build to check my new components before the case gets to me and was wondering if someone could give me some temps for stock 2500K?
I didnt install windows yet so at the moment Im looking at purely temps in BIOS...
With boxed intel cooler, on stock clocks I had ~40C, and getting about ~70C in BIOS with 4.6GHz @1.32V
Changed the cooler to the proper one - Scythe Mugen 2 and I had ~34C and ~45C respectively...
Are these ok?

First thing to do is uninstall one of the temperature monitoring applications. When you have two running they mess up big time. One only.

Second what are you temps as measured in BIOS? Those recorded in the BIOS should be very similar to those at idle in OS.

Since you are on a ASUS board just install the monitoring software that came with the board. That will give you accurate temps of your system.
