Well i just got a core i7, and i'm hearing that intel plans to release the core i5 in third Quarter of 09. I was thinking that it would be socket 1366, but i think i read somewhere that it is not, and it will use ddr2 memory. I AM SO CONFUSED! does anyone have any good info on the core i5 or just other core i7's (to be released) for that matter?

It will be a new socket called H1 (or LGA 1156), they will be DDR3 only (Dual channel) and will be the new mid range platform while i& will continue to be for the high end.

Makes you wonder about pricing though, as the i7 CPU prices are not extortionate ... it's the boards that are over priced - and Intel have very little control over board pricing.

Oh dear.... why the hell would they go with a different socket type? I meaa how many people got 775 board with a cheap cpu and thne updated to a better cpu later? If they are doing this it would mean if you wanted to upgrade you cpu to an i7 you would have to upgrade your board too....

775 has been around for quite a while now. They need to think about future products, etc..

i dont think that was his point i think he was meaning you could buy a good motherboard n a cheap cpu and upgrade in 3months time when you had saved enough but now you have to buy the whole lot again

of course this is what they will do its basic market stragy to keep the customer continue coming back

Its a single chip chipset if that makes sense and will only be dual channel and connect via DMI not QPI meaning a lot less PCB layers so cheaper. The boards are expected to be more simple than some S775 counter parts.

Does the 1156 socket have memory controller built in like the i7 and have other newer features or is it basicly the same as the 775 socket?

I think Intel may have delayed production on the i5 on purpose to allow the stocks of 775 cpus to clear before they release a socket whose cpus will be very similar in which customers it aims at as the older cpus.

Yes the new H1 CPUs have an onboard dual channle memory controller and some will have the graphics core (45nm hybrid) on the cpu die as well. Hence the extra pins.

The new socket has a lifespan of only a year :( They gonna completely remake it for the new chip design they have in the works.

Think i will stick with my 775 for a while yet, till they decide on a new socket they will use for more then 1 chip. Or till AMD release its i7 beater ;)

Possible P55 and Core i5 cpus due this Summer in July :)

Still rumours but would be nice imo they should just phase out Core i7 and its mobos, too expensive and possible intels worst move for this global credit crunch. It would be cheaper and easier too start afresh with the Core i5 a soloution that everyone can afford and one day replace the 775 socket:)

Yes....as above, i5 only runs dual channel DDR3 and has no QPI. Whether that will make any difference in the real world; who knows.

Again saying something has more layers is not reason enough for increased costs .. cost should come down as things are manufactured in larger numbers, meaning that if i7 was the only solution available and was mainstream the board costs will tumble .. maybe they won't fall as low as £60, but they should still go down to the >£100ish level.

Intel's side of things is very aggressively priced, it's the board makers that are pricing far too high

The chipset is a huge proportion of the cost of a mainboard, the X58 is not a cheap chipset. Even the most aggressivly priced boards are still around £160-£170 mark, there is no way you will see £100 for an X58 board unless Intel reduce the chipset price.

Even the Micro ATX X58 boards you would have thought since they cut out half the board they still somehow managed to cram it with every feature and price tag of £200+

Still Core i7 isnt too badly priced I guess, we got DDR3 nice and cheap now and more then affordable, the cpus are appropriately priced considering its purely a highend platform. Its just the mobos that are still darn expensive if they were £100-150 the good ones with 6 slots it would have been ok.

I still say if Intel launch Core i5 and Dual variants and keep the cpus from £50+ and the mobos from £60-120 then we can say goodbye too Socket 775/DDR2 :) And while there at it ditch the ps2 ports lol
