intel Core i5?

creating a socket just for i5 is crazy, they should use same socket as i7 and just have the extra features disabled in bios, that way you could buy an x58 board and choose either a i5 or i7 cpu, it would also let people upgrade their cpu's overtime. Intel is just plain greedy now. Look how long AMD's AM2 lasted, those users had the opportunity to upgrade to loads of different cpu's over the past few years.

Hope i5 doesnt catch on and i hope the 1366 socket is used for a long time as if i buy a core i7 920 i wanna be able to upgrade the cpu to a better 1 in 18months time.

£240 cpu + £220 (decent x58 board) = EXPENSIVE!!! should be £170 + £140 really. x48 was the highend board before and that went down to around £140 for good boards, intel is just being greedy with having no competition.

They wouldn't have come to this decision lightly, if it was a simple as disabling features at the BIOS level they would have done that. Socket 1366 is the high end product while H1 will be for mainstream (and eventially low end).

+ the whole point of changing the socket is reduced cost overall.

Am hoping the Core i5 is roughly the same performance and perhaps even more energy/heat green friendly. Hopefully they can just roll out micro atx boards with 1 mini and 1 x 16x pci slot and 2 DDR slots and sell the mobo for £50 while there at it;)

Such stupid talk, almost ANY 775 CPU will do anything you need it too. I would bet all my savings on that fact that bar games all of you using i7 setups on average never get over 10% usage. It's a toy for you guys and as such I hope Intel / AMD push you for every penny as your clearly retarded.

I agree, although the i7 may be a good buy for future releases the cost of them at the moment is insane (if you are only using it for gaming [as many people are]). Yes, I do have an i7 - but I need it for rendering 3D work, and if anyone is considering it for that then I couldn't recommend it more.

Pretty strange that they aren't just slapping these on S1366. I can't remember the last time intel introduced a new socket just for 'mainstream' cpus as opposed to the whole range / top end.

Wow some anger issues?

I bought a Ci7 to surf web, email, and micro word. Are you saying I over killed?

No, seriously I had the money and wanted the best money could buy. I didn't want to have any regrets as to what I could have had. If you are broke or on a budget, get a intel dual or amd. If you have disposable income which anymore nowadays you have to have to do this hobby, than go with the i7, you won't regret it.

Every hobby is expensive if you are serious about it.....Even trains.

Cost :)

If Intel can save themselves even £10 they will bring out a newer socket mobo.

Nothing wrong with the purchase of an Core i7, tbh the points been missed about the whole Core i5 its there too simply make things easier/affordable for everyone and make it a firm choice and replacement for Socket 775 even if its not required!

Your core i7 isnt gonna suddenly become old or out of date, it will still be a supported platform for the newer/faster/more green Core i7s due 2010 and maybe the Octocores by then.

Yes, you're right, it is a toy, and it's my money, so kindly don't tell me how to spend it
