Intel Core i7 950 issues

When am playing a game at say ultra I have FPS issues. My specs are :

Intel Core i7 950 3.07 Overlocked to - 3838.91mhz
DDR3 Ram at 1600mhz
A 6870 ATI GDDR5 1GB
A raptor hardrive 160GB

When I play the likes of BF3 on Ultra it will struggle on some parts. I think my computer system could quite easily take any game on ultra yet I still get FPS Issues. My CPU seems to spike very strangely when playing games. All the threads aren't used when they need to be and it seems to stress some cores more than others. Any help?

Hi there and welcome to the OCUK forums :)

May I ask what resolution you play at?

The HD 6870 is a decent card, but tbh it is only a midrange card - so at resolutions of 1080p and above you can't expect it to keep up at ultra settings in GPU demanding games like BF3.

This article shows the relative performance of graphics cards in BF3 at different resolutions and ultra settings. The HD 5870 is roughly equivalent to the HD 6870 in terms of performance.

So in terms of ultra in most high end games, It may struggle alittle, can see that the 5870 can keep up with it if not overtake it in FPS.

Edit : I am playing at 1920x1080p

As a fellow 6870 owner I can confirm that this is no way near enough for Ultra.

I run on the High preset at 1920x1080 without AA and I can average around 50FPS, and sometimes less than that. Ultra is just out of reach for a card with only 1GB VRAM!

Make a difference for your max FPS? Yes, however it will still stutter and the FPS fluctuation will be huge since it will keep running out of VRAM.

IMHO invest in a 7950 once prices have settled if you want Ultra.

I agree with this. I did a 6870 crossfire upgrade and suffered from stutter at 1080p in BF3
