Intel Dual Core from £79 +VAT

IIRC Conroe will work on Intel 975 chipsets so perhaps going dirt cheap isn't the best idea - as then you will be able to get the new batch of processors along with a very good chipset - however someone correct me if I am wrong.

EDIT: No, mobo manufacturers and Intel have screwed the consumer once again

Future proofing isn't a concern as its no real money saver IMO. Sell the old stuff and get the next great bang for buck on the trailing rather than bleeding edge of technology. I think it makes more sense to do that.

It can save a bit of hassle though, even if it doesn't save you much money. I find having to replace a motherboard is probably the 2nd most annoying thing, only preceded by having to rebuild a water cooling loop. And the Intel 975 and 955 are excellent chipsets I have to say as well as supporting Xfire and SLi without bridges/dongles.

Hi there

Any motherboards and memory you want us to get in to go with these to make them a good cheap solution to build up?
Gibbo, these look worth getting in - Asrock 775Twins-HDTV S775

Anyone know how the stock fans on these compare in terms of noise to the stock fan you get with a Venice?

Like the look of these CPU's

What Mobo would you recommend out of these 2?

Asus P5P800SE intel 865PE or Asus P7VD1-X Ultra Via PT800

I'm going to keep DDR Ram and 9800 pro, like the idea of PCI-E graphics if I want to go that way, but worried about the Via chipset!!!!!!!

How do you this this would compare to a P4 3.4E @ 4.0Ghz?

BTW it is going to be watercooled, so would like to 4.0Ghz

Cheers :)

Go for the Intel chipset

These are far more stable than the Via chipsets. Personally I'd always go with an Intel chipset for Intel chips if I have the chance!

As for comparing. At stock, it'll be far slower but this chip isn't designed to be left at stock!

At 4GHz you'll notice an improvement in multi-threaded apps but not so much otherwise. You see your P4 has HT tech so this helps with the smoothness of windows and multitasking anyway :)

I would normally agree, but the P5VD1-X supports 1066fsb CPU's and the 805 is a native 533fsb. So my thoughts are the mobo chipset will not be getting pushed too much between 533 and 800fsb (100 to 133) if the 805 gets that high :)

I also like the PCI-E Graphics Card (cheaper) upgrade path if I want to change my 9800 pro.

I have never used a VIA chipset mobo, have used SIS in the past 650&655, but normally use intel chipsets. Have got 2 PC's on 865 chipset & 1 875, all running P4E s478 preshotts

Any thoughts?????

Does the chipset support the Intel dual cores including the lower end ones?

I haven't built an Intel PC on a Via chipset for sometime but the Via K8T800 chipset on my Opteron is rock solid

yeah - its nforce 4 that has the trouble with lower end duals

I've got exactly the same setup as you're getting marcus_667, and I haven't seen mine go above 45C yet.

I've got the CPU fan on Auto and it only runs at just over 2000rpm most of the time.

I'll be interested to see what clocks you get with your setup, as mine can only go about 10% (just under 3ghz) stably. Any more and it's blue screens galore!

Just be careful as I ended up having to reinstall windows and reformat my drive yesterday after I pushed it too far. I'm assuming the motherboard is the limiting factor, but could be wrong.

Having said that, as you'll see over on another thread in CPUs I contributed to, the performance increase with that 10% OC in benchmarks is not that great and hardly worth the risk IMHO.

It's still a quick little chip at stock, and you'll have no trouble in games etc.

On a value for money basis, it's got to rate pretty high, so you can be pleased with your purchase! :)

well i was going athlon x2 and dont really have the cash for the stuff i want then seen these little beauties but ive always liked amd not owned a p4 before so it will be interesting :D

well this is what it will be like in a few days

lian li pc 7 plus case
80 gig wd ide hdd :O i know i suck lol
powercolor x800gto
i have 1 gig generic ddr and 2 gig cruicial which ill probably use the crucial
the intel 805
asus mobo

and its gunna be a huge difference over my skt 754 setup :D
and if i got it to 3 ghz + id be happy

AGP?

Is there a decent AGP motherboard to run this venice 3000+ processor in?

I am currently running a 2.4ghz p4 800 (northwood) in an abit max 3 motherboard. I was planning on holding out a year and scrapping the whole PC for a new one based on PCI-express but was recently tempted to buy a 3ghz prescott for £120. The activity around the venice has tempted me to scrap the intel setup and get one but I can't afford to scrap my 6800GT as well for 2 new PCI-X cards. Would there be a perceivable benefit from the 3ghz prescott compared to the venice + new motherboard?

Thanks for any help & advice.
