Purchased this just after Christmas, do I need to update the firmware?

So far I've just left it to its own devices...but wonder if I should flash it.

Also I'm currently running in IDE mode, are there any advantages to AHCI mode?

Depends what version you are on at the moment? I believe the latest version is 2CV102HD, if you don't have this then yes I would recommend updating for automatic TRIM support.

It's worth flashing, latest firmware versions had some performance increases. It's a very quick and simple process - Bootable CD-ISO, only takes a couple of minutes and you don't lose any data.

Then download the Intel SSD toolbox, schedule a daily trim and forget about it. The manual trim only takes about a second so there's no interuption.

AHCI mode gives a performance boost too by enabling NCQ, and in vista/7 all it needs is a registry change of a single key value, and changing the bios setting.

You might want to make sure you put the latest drivers for your motherboard on too.
